I like doing more than showing. Yet, I’m reminded kindly by friends, that I should work on showing more of what I do, with a little more polish. 🫠 In September, I took two weeks to travel solo from Rome to Farnese to Florence and then back to Rome. It was energizing, the painting was fantastic, and I made some new animal friends.

Porcelain forms. Thrown, altered, assembled. Loose control. Structural tension. Functional in theory. Interpretive in practice.

She does not resist the water. She remembers it. Ridges like the cadence of breath. Curves turning away from spectacle. A narrow opening holds its own silence, Not wound, but origin. Time moves across her in long repetitions, Touching, returning, insisting. What erodes is not her strength - It is only what no longer belongs. #abstract #sculpture #ceramics

We’re saturated with options and possibilities. In times when I’ve felt decision paralysis in one form or another, the answer is almost always ‘less’.

I love this baseball - it’s traveled with me for a long time. This moment feels right to explore it through paint. Oil on canvas 5’x5’ Far out of my comfort zone

My ability to let go of outcomes comes and goes like the tides. Watercolor helps keep me in the moment, focused on play not perfect. #watercolor #letgo #abstract

Feeling a bit tired of skies, I set myself the challenge of working more abstractly. To get started, I asked someone who is generous with their time, for color preferences: Blue > Green Purple > Pink Red > Orange Yellow > White Burnt sienna lays out the composition, while the warmer colors provide depth and texture. The bottom line is an anchor (and was a bit of a struggle to get right). The next challenge was to imply soccer instead of saying soccer. Highlighted areas represent the focus of a striker, the lines and circles (loose idea of a passing map) bring unity to the composition. What do you think? Did I complete my challenge? Will she like it…? Who knows 🤪 #oilpainting #process #soccer #blue

Italy part 3. Traveling is a practice in noise reduction, a space to tune your senses to what captures your attention in the now, the immediate, not what is expected or routine.

Part 2 of painting in Italy. Sarco Bosco was an unexpected delight, an ancient sculpture park restored after it caught Picasso’s eye. Each morning I would say hello to the animals, paint, sketch, wander.
