The wish list was small but mighty in this historic Bertrand Goldberg condo: make the kitchen bigger (there was nowhere to go), make it efficient but robust, make it sleek and sexy, masculine and fashionable, be aware of the skyline outside (surrounded by art deco buildings, views of Lake Michigan and an urban park) and hide the ‘stuff’. We designed artistic cabinetry handmade by the team at @zak_rose , integrated appliances from the technology driven and aesthetically bound @gaggenauofficial Our use of the leathered midnight blue quartzite from @mgsi.niles | @stoneluxchicago and premium fixtures from @brizofaucet echo the constantly changing Lake Michigan from the 180 degree views of this Gold Coast condo. The clients wanted to update the look of the foyer and add more usable storage (more on this in a later post). We refinished the maple stairs and returned the painted risers to their natural finish. A checkerboard marble tile references other marble elements on the ground level. A new custom-fabricated black powder-coated steel railing incorporates elegant curves to echo the new arches in the kitchen and guest bath. A new custom-fabricated simple white wall-rail recedes into the background. The existing structural beam is recased with white-oak to tie into the kitchen millwork. Swipe right to see before image. Although small in size, we wanted to create an unexpected, dramatic, elegant powder room. A honed Carrara marble wainscot becomes an integral stone vanity and sink before transitioning to an Eros grey marble base and floor. The last image shows the schematic rendering. The very small size of the space and high level of detail required a great deal of on-site coordination and planning between the architect, GC, stone fabricator, and plumber. @mchughgeneralcontracting ’s team expertly pulled it off – including cutting a slot in the drywall to slip the large slabs into the space through the framing. In the guest/play room, white oak millwork offers a coat closet and toy storage while felt infill panels offer a place to tack up the children’s art. A new arch in the kitchen hides an existing beam while creating a soft transition between spaces. New maple floors, white oak millwork, marble, and brass appear throughout the ground level tying the spaces together. A custom bar/record cabinet designed and fabricated by @zak_rose anchors the space between the kitchen and dining. Back in 2019, we worked with the clients on their upper level renovation. In 2021, we worked with the clients again to rethink the more public ground level of the home. The project went on hold for a couple of years, but in 2024, we finalized the design and construction. We are excited to share the final photos! We reconfigured the ground level to include a more spacious kitchen with a better flow, elevate a small powder room, reorganize a guest room, rearrange a bathroom, and make the most of a tight foyer. We designed custom solutions in each of the spaces to maximize every inch and update the aesthetics. In the kitchen, a new white oak island and band of off-white lacquered cabinets frame a graphic Statuario marble backsplash. A fridge is tucked into the wall and hidden with white lacquered appliance panels. Brass hardware and fixtures add warmth and reflection. Swipe right to see before image.
