90 years ago today, one of my favourite fighters of the Second World War first took to the skies - the Spitfire!
The prototype Spitfire K5054 had flown today in 1936 from the Supermarine factory near Southampton, with test pilot Joseph ‘Mutt’ Summers at the controls. This iconic aircraft was designed by R.J. Mitchell, who was also famous for designing the Supermarine S.6B seaplane that won the Schneider Trophy.
The Spitfire faced off against the Messerschmitt Bf 109 in the Battle of Britain, resulting in a match in firepower and performance. The Spitfire scored 5,988 kills against enemy aircraft over the course of the War in Europe.
The model featured here is the Airfix 1/48 Spitfire Mk.Ia, built in 2024 and painted as a yellow-nosed ‘aggressor’ with RAF markings. Follow my page Malc’s Model World on @malcs_models for more modelling content.
