Indian Arrival Day Cooking Series – Episode 2: Meethai (Sweets)🍬
As we continue our celebration of Indian Arrival Day, the Ministry of Culture and Community Development is delighted to present the second installment of our Indian Arrival Day Cooking Series — a sweet tribute to the cherished recipes and traditions that have become an integral part of Trinidad and Tobago’s rich cultural heritage. 🍭🍥
This week, our team visited the Cascade Community Centre, where Mrs. Gwyneth Morris-Alexander, Permanent Secretary (Ag.) and Ms. Florette Clarke, Deputy Permanent Secretary (A.g.), rolled up their sleeves for a hands-on culinary experience, learning how to prepare two beloved East Indian delicacies: Kurma and Gulab Jamoon. 👩🏽🍳 Our special feature guest, The Honourable Michelle Benjamin, Minister of Culture and Community Development also joined the session and put in some real elbow grease as she took part in preparing these traditional sweets. 💪🏽🍯
The session was expertly led by Culinary Tutor Ms. Audra Mohammed of the Community Education Culinary Classes. 👩🏽🍳📚
🛒 Kurma Ingredients:
🌾 4 cups flour
🧈 ¼ cup butter
🌿 ½ tsp cinnamon powder
✨ ½ tsp ground elychee
🫚 1 tsp ginger powder
💧 ½ cup water to knead flour
🍯 Kurma Syrup (Paag):
🍚 2 cups granulated sugar
💧 2 cups water
🫚 1 tbsp grated ginger
🌿 1 cinnamon stick
🍮 Gulab Jamoon Ingredients:
🥛 2 cups full cream milk powder
✨ 1 tsp ground elychee
🌰 ½ tsp ground nutmeg
🌾 4 cups flour
🧈 ½ lb butter
🥛 1 cup evaporated milk
🍯 Gulab Jamoon Syrup (Paag):
🍚 1 cup sugar
🫚 1 tbsp grated ginger
💧 ¼ cup water
