My essay is out in print today π I wrote this last year upon visiting Jakarta, the city I grew up in, trying to make sense of the ways it had changed in my absence. There are so many inevitable what-ifs that arise when you leave a place; this essay let me linger in alternate realities to better understand the one at hand.

Three weeks of following deer tracks in the snow, thawing in the sun against the grain silo, rolling in writerβs block and flinging my brain across the room then writing through it, of descending into strange tender parts of myself while surrounded by gothic knotted branches and wild doves and brilliant kind people.
