Lately, I’ve been obsessed with textures and colors. It’s definitely a result of the stuff I’ve been consuming and the way I’ve been exposing myself to a variety of design fundamentals.
A few months ago, I saw a video of someone roaming the streets of Old Delhi i believe? With a handheld scanner, capturing wall textures and typographies to use in their art.
I never found that specific scanner, but it gave me the push to finally explore this side of design if i may call it that way.
Recently, I went to a cool exhibition in Delhi (more on my Substack soon). One piece was this vibrant red with an incredible texture. I took a wide shot of the artwork, but I also grabbed a digital close-up on my phone specifically to capture that grain.
The picture is from when I shot the Seedhe Maut gig last December. For this edit, I stripped the original color to find a balance between the raw shot and the texture I wanted to overlay. Deciding this particular shot was pretty easy because I associate red with SM and more experimentation with textures with that genre of music.
I eventually pushed the reds toward orange because it just fit the vibe better.
I know I could’ve easily used a digital asset from the internet, but trying something intentional using moments that were completely unrelated felt way more rewarding.
It might not be the “best” edit, but i thought i should share it regardless.
P.S - If you know of a good handheld scanner, send me a link. Also, subscribe to my substack while you’re at it and obviously if you want to read more!!
