as a child i had a strange fascination for salons. not beauty parlours. not fancy luxury salons with air conditioning. but salons with texture. sharp blue, orange, pink rolling chairs.. mirrors scratches with a permanent glare. products arranged in no order at all. ponds powder sprinkled over combs and scissors..
they had a smell that belonged only to them. lemon. mint. petrol. rose. all living together in the same room.
and always, the smallest tv in the corner. K TV films or sun music songs. balu anna humming along absentmindedly.
Singapore Salon was my neighbouring salon in Madurai. Vanammamalai Nagar.
Balu anna cut my hair from the time i was very young. ten rupees for a haircut. a price that now feels imaginary.
one afternoon i stole ten rupees from home and quietly cycled to the salon.
“anna… oru attack cut.”
he did not ask questions.
he placed the wooden plank across the arms of the rolling chair so i could become taller for the mirror. wrapped the whitest white cloth around my small body. sprayed fragrant water that landed cold on my neck.
then the scissors began.
such a beautiful sound. close to my ears. silver and sharp and rhythmic. like music. like theatre. immersive theatre for one small girl sitting very still. hair falling like black commas onto the floor.
and suddenly my sister arrived at the entrance.. breathless.
“everyone’s looking for you.”
“we thought you got kidnapped.”
i looked at her and smiled.
while Balu anna removed the white cloth and dusted my neck and back gently with a sponge. as though finishing a sacred ritual.
i still see Balu anna whenever i go to Madurai. the salon still exists. still blue. still small. still carrying its old smells and sounds.
it’s been a couple of decades and i still carry the same fascination..

A few months ago, I said yes.
To something you’ll see soon. I’ve developed the most curious affection for film sets.
Around 10 years ago … the vanity was my least favourite place on a set … shared with three other actors. We brought our own costumes. We changed in impossible corners. Before that, it was bathrooms .. the kind with a broken latch and fluorescent lighting. I dreaded the waiting period, the disrespect, the hierarchy.
Now I look forward to it. I look forward to shoots. To the in-between moments. To the conversations that happen through the thin caravan walls. To get my hair and makeup done to the music of Tinariwen in the vanity. To read , to write , to wonder, to be bored during the waiting period.
Theatre taught me that performance is the least interesting part of performance.
I am the first actor in my entire family.
It’s tempting to romanticise it …. to say I grew up in Madurai with no TV, with limited access, with very little exposure to the world. And all of that is true.
But I’m also aware that I was still more privileged than many other girls from small towns in ways I may not even fully understand.
I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
Because Practising radical self-love is important.
For years, I went around asking for work in cinema … sending profiles, making showreels, using social media to put myself out there, speaking to people every day to see if they had anything for me. I chased opportunity like it was a late bus. And then… I stopped.
I stopped running. I did the work. Watched the world.. Stayed ready. Practised every day.
Thank you to everyone who wants to see my work … fans, friends, lovers, women. Because of you, I am upgraded to a vanity.
