FUNKUPATION~ SUNDAY @ 2:00 ❤️🔥
A collaborative Funk music project based in Boone, NC. Started in the summer 2023, Funkupation brings together local professional, semi-pro and amateur musicians to participate in funky improvisatory events. Guest performers have included many local luminaries and well as regional and national artists.
Performing about once a month in various Boone venues, Funkupation’s appeal has grown such to be featured in High Country summer concert series such as Valle Crucis, Banner Elk, and the 2025 Boonerang.
Funkupation core members include: ~Guitarist Doug James~
has enjoyed a multi-decade career as a performer and educator. Working in diverse classical and popular styles, he has toured throughout North America and Europe presenting hundreds of feature concerts for international music festivals and such notable venues as NPR’s Performance Today, and Carnegie and Merkin Halls in NYC. Doug has recently retired from the faculty at App State’s Hayes School of Music where he served 27 years as Professor of Guitar. He remains a sought-after clinician in the classical guitar world, and performs frequently with the Extraordinaires, Junaluska Gospel Choir, and Funkupation. ~Toma Fuller~
A multi-talented keybordist, singer, and guitarist. In addition to being a founding member of Funkupation, Toma is much in demand and plays regularly with Dave Brewer’s Foscoe Four, Dead of Winter, and Leopard Lounge to name a few. As noted in the Watauga Democrat: “Toma kind of comes from that rock & roll school of Leon Russell and Dr. John with heavy doses of the real New Orleans piano masters tradition that includes Allen Toussaint, Professor Longhair and James Booker. His keyboard playing is swinging, with lots of 16th notes and a right hand that is driving. He can really punch up the jams. He can play with a percussive style, yet his singing is also incredible.”
