What has it meant to you winning the Netflix Documentary Talent Fund?
It has been absolutely amazing.
First of all, I have never won anything like this before, so just winning it was joyously overwhelming. But then getting to make the film, and work with our wonderful execs, was such an enriching experience, that it really made me feel even more certain that this is what I wanna do with my life.
And of course, having the name Netflix attached to something you made gives it a weight and traction that you might not get otherwise. And I’m just really happy that I got to make the film I wanted to make, and that I’ve had the opportunity to share it with a wide audience.

This week, we’re shining a light on Maya Avidov, a creative force in the world of short films as a writer, director, and producer.
Her journey shows how freelancing can be both a challenge and an opportunity for creativity, self-expression and resilience.
✍️ About Maya
Maya took the leap into self-employment because she’s not a 9-5 office person. Her passion lies in moving from project to project, bringing unique visions to life. Inspired by her father’s entrepreneurial spirit, she embraced the freelance world to have full control over her time and creativity.
🗣️ Maya’s advice for freelancers
“Try and join as many online communities as you feel comfortable with. They don't just offer insights - they give you something Google and AI can't: human experience and analysis.”
🗣️ Biggest challenge
“Breaking into a new market when I moved to the UK was tough. I overcame it by recognising my strengths and style. Seeing the common threads in my work helped me identify what makes me unique.”
🗣️ What she loves about freelancing
“I love working on a variety of projects with different people. Team and world-building is such a major part of what I do, and I find it so rewarding to move from one project to the next.”
