Jujutsu Kaisen 0 – Dubbing Showcase
During my dissertation projects at university, my good friend Max (
@maxso_131 ) and I were both drawn into sound redesign videos where they were taking creative liberties with reverb, bass, and atmospheric layering—often pushing beyond what’s traditionally heard in animation.
Wanting to create a piece of our own, this led us to search for anime scenes that would not only be cool to hear redone in new ways, but also be fun to record and edit. Thus, we ended up picking the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie—in particular, the cursed speech scene.
Unlike other dubs, this time around, I voice both central characters—Yuta Okkotsu and Suguru Geto—bringing the start of their clash to life from both sides.
Admittedly, it can be very hard to dual-role. Making my voice sound just different enough from itself that you can differentiate between characters isn't a skill I had put into practice before this project; however, a year later, I'm proud to say in my newest work it’s almost impossible to tell I’m the same actor muli-voicing (Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings).
Listening to Max's sound design for the first time left me with my jaw on the floor. With no frame of reference besides how I’d delivered my lines in the sound booth, I remember gawking at how cool the echoed megaphone blasting the peons to smithereens sounded. (Hire him pls 🙏)
Despite this, being able to play a villain like Geto was almost just as fun. I took some inspiration from Keith Silverstein’s role of Hisoka, which led to a much more playful type of evil in my performance—one I'd love to go back and explore more of in the future. I’d happily sink my teeth into more scenes from this film—villainous speeches, unhinged laughter, cursed clashes—bring it all on.
