The Drag Truck Re-Cap: This build for Sean at @speedengineering escalated… a LOT… Several times… My projects have a weird way of doing that. I may or may not do a video going over this wild project at a later date. It started as a question if I could cage a Silverado. A little later it became a scheduled project to put a cage in one, link it, and lower the front to match. That’s was it. šŸ˜‚ You couldn’t buy a short bed truck in the new trucks, so a short bed had to be ordered separately, and I agreed to swap the beds while the truck was cut in half. Around January of 2020 a little base model v6 Sierra found its way to the cutting board. Estimated build time was 10 weeks šŸ˜…ā€¦ Sean had already ordered the wheels and tires, so when we put a bolt on 5/7 drop on the truck, we were able to mock them up and discovered that the truck just wasn’t quite low enough. Realistically, the truck needed to be dropped 11/13 to let the wheels sit in the wheel wells like the older trucks did on 5/7’s. We could set the links wherever we wanted, but the front required some cutting. I was building Bret’s Charger’s a front clip built in the background, so naturally, we kicked this build up a notch, and decided the truck needed one too. It didn’t make much sense to keep 4ft of 10ā€ tall factory frame at this point either, so the truck stepped up to a chassis build. It was going to be one mean sleeper! I built a chassis table just for this build, and I went with 2ā€x3ā€ rectangle tube design for the main rails, allowable for SFI 25.3C in case he wanted to hit the track, and Sean started building a 1200-1500hp range twin turbo LSX. My new objective was to prove you could build a drag car that wasn’t full of dead tube junctions, and could keep Sean safe in a 3500lb truck going a touch too fast. (If you look at the cage it’s much more like a desert truck cage with a funny car hoop and double frame rails than a drag car.) More continued in comments…

Some things in life are just a little trickier to navigate than others… this little rats nest was up there on top of the ā€œtrickyā€ list. It was referred to by numerous other names this week as well during the build though! šŸ˜… #srt10 #srt10ram #10into1 #10into1header #customheaders #snakepit

I’m definitely not one of the top aluminum guys in this town, but I’m pretty stoked on how this one turned out! 2500hp intake plenum for some 2JZ land speed racing coming right up! All 3/16ā€, 1/4ā€, 3/8ā€, 1/2ā€ and 3/4ā€ for big boost! šŸŽļøšŸ’ØšŸ˜Ž

The less glamorous side of a header build… 0.120ā€ wall bends had its own set of challenges that were fairly new to me. Multiple weld passes, tube fitting, higher amperage, and getting a proper purge with the larger gaps were all fun to navigate. Finally had a little bit of free time to put on these things the past few days. Almost done! A few people have asked. The thick wall mandrel bends ordered from @stainless_headers . šŸ˜ŽšŸ¤™ #landspeed #2jz #compoundturbo #turboheaders

Little 2JZ Tuesday for ya! Probably not a thing… but it could be. šŸ˜… Equal length, properly phased, 0.125ā€ wall, compound land speed header headed out for test fit! šŸ¤ž #2jz #turbomanifold #bonneville #landspeedracing

Here’s a couple more shots of the Rubicon trip with @alecnavarro and @steves_hotrods_and_customs . Rumor has it, @alecnavarro is piecing something a little cooler together too. Goal was to wheel to from Loon Lake to Buck Island day 1, then to the Springs and back to Buck Island Day 2, then back to Loon Lake/drive home Day 3… However, I got heavy footed at Soup Bowl, tried to climb it in the rain with a 6500lb truck, and broke a rear axle shaft in the first two hours šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļøā€¦ Thankfully, @alecnavarro at @axlepros and the guys at @sierragearandaxle set me up with an awesome Dana 80 front with an ARB, my friend @westcoastone set me up with some old 40ā€ stickies that gave me a little extra grip, and the rear 14-bolt’s Detroit held enough for me to 3-wheel the run to Buck Island and back with minimal challenge! We camped at Little Sluice night two, watched the @rockzombie4x4 crew punish a handful of rigs, and wheeled out the short section Day 3. Awesome trip! A little bit of a change of plans, but everything worked out. So grateful we all got to drag our dads out with us, and very grateful for all the cool stuff we get to build with our buddies and the companies behind us!

In this week’s road car feature I take you guys way back to the time the homie @maxplowman_built @builtindustries had an LMP3 race car / X-Wing fighter in for a custom exhaust setup. What an entanglement of technology and engineering packaged into a small but mighty purpose built rocket created to push the limits of aerodynamics, downforce, and grip. Rad stuff man šŸ¤™šŸ»šŸ¤™šŸ»šŸ¤™šŸ»
