āItās a practice devoted to crashing cars⦠hard.ā
This is how photographer @maxpigott describes banger racing, an unofficial British heritage sport where people buy cheap old cars, lovingly restore them to working order, then smash them to pieces in a race on a mud track somewhere in the countrysideābefore repairing them so they can do it all over again.
A predominantly working-class subculture, the tradition is often passed down inter-generationally and drivers start as young as ten. Pigott's latest project No Guts, No Glory captures the quiet moments behind the chaos: the thrill and sense of belonging found in rear-ending someone in a f*cked-up Vauxhall Astra. Some collages from some recent work for @lccmapjd where we were encouraged to ārethinkā our practice under the theme āconstructed truthā
Using pictures from my family archive I was exploring ideas around authenticity and identity, or specifically the instability of those values in a society that is increasingly mediated by algorithms, and a pressure to perform a sort of digital labour in order to contribute to our reputation and potential economic and social value. Labour that is underpinned by a capitalist framework that subtly (or often blatantly) commands us to always be measuring ourselves and sharing more and more information as a means to take that measureā¦
And now Iām posting this here to SUBVERT all that okay???
