Today I woke up paralyzed and restless at the same time. One month of this nightmare, with no end in sight. I put up fliers of hostages to find a person on a Citibike behind me tearing them all down. They screamed fuck Israel. I responded free Gaza. They called me a cracker kike oppressor, threw the posters at me, told me to kill myself, and biked off.
I could end this story there and let the internet win. And fit my feelings into narratives that make them make sense, but I won’t. Here’s what else happened:
A man named Rocco from the Bronx and a woman named Jackie from the Lower East Side hoisted me up to tape more posters higher where they couldn’t be reached.
A girl named Maya stopped to help me and told me her family is in Hertzeliya. I told her I have family there too. She knows my family. We hugged.
A rabbi went to the hardware store and bought me a glue spray to secure the posters so that they could not get ripped.
Dozens of people thanked me with their eyes and with their words.
I pray that we all remember each other’s humanity. That the hostages are returned home alive. That the violence and suffering of innocent people ends. That leaders who believe in peaceful coexistence replace those who got us into this hell. That the people of Israel and Palestine heal from the trauma they endured this month, throughout their lives, and for generations.
