yes im still alive and painting
in may of 2021 as I was preparing to graduate from art school, I was hit up by springhill co asking if I wanted to help out with a magazine they were in the process of making for lebron james—and they needed a cover for the first issue of “the program.”
being from cleveland, having this opportunity to work with lbj’s team was exhilarating enough, but in late june I was invited out to the brand launch party of @makespringhill where I could meet all the fantastic team and artists that helped make the magazine, and where i could meet the cover model himself, @kingjames . it was a night I will never forget, and a story I wont get tired of telling.
while I did paint the cover, none of it wouldve been possible without the help of close friends and the springhill team

this reference is of a church with a dwindling congregation of maybe 7 people now. they don’t even use the pews anymore, they just set up some chairs in the front. those chairs are obviously not included here.

this painting was made opposite fever ball. I was thinking about a few things. tension. delicate vs destructive. release vs restraint. this is a second version of a smaller painting but I think it became something else entirely from the 1st.

Fever Ball

from a recurring fever dream I had as a child whenever I was sick: a large wrecking ball that would pulse closer and closer to my face. it matched the rhythm of blood pumping into my temporal artery. anytime I closed my eyes I could see it. a few weeks ago I saw it for the first time as an adult.

de un sueño febril recurrente que tenía cuando era niño, cada vez que estaba enfermo: una gran bola de demolición que se acercaba y se alejaba de mi rostro con pulsaciones. iba al ritmo de la sangre bombeando en mi arteria temporal. cada vez que cerraba los ojos, podía verla. hace unas semanas la vi por primera vez como adulto.

Silence

embalming caps are used in the embalming process to keep the eyelids closed and to retain the eye shape structure while fluids drain. they are not used to prevent death but to hide the aesthetic effects of death.
silence as absence of sound: stillness. silence as refusal to speak like an omission. silence as an imperative command: “be quiet!”

tapones de embalsamamiento se utilizan para mantener los ojos cerrados y para mantener la estructura de la forma de los ojos durante el proceso de embalsamamiento. no se utilizan para prevenir la muerte pero para esconder los efectos estéticos de la muerte.

references are an xray of my mouth a few months ago and a telephone pole I saw in the philippines. couple things that come to mind for me: baring teeth, another reason not to smile, wires and braces, pollution of many types, social and housing insecurity.
