@esther.newyork Delphine Hennelly & Max Keene Delighted to be at Esther III! Find us in the elegant four-story Beaux-Arts building at the Estonian House New York, with a presentation of works by Delphine Hennelly and Max Keene that explore theatrical narratives. Hennelly’s paintings represent archetypal subjects and relationships as a method to depict social patterns, performativity, and constructions of the self. Keene’s sculptures express his interest in the “out of step” elements of our everyday, creating works that seek an unsettling tension between the familiar and the enchanted. Two figures pose at the edges of the room, their bodies crafted from pipes and stucco. [...] Throughout the exhibition, Max Keene continues to construct his distinctive world, built with an interconnected system of pulleys and pipes, streetlamps and electrical sockets, cobblestones and baseboards. A collection of novelty coins, an array of UV lights, and a work in progress, taped to the wall, lay the foundations. If part of Keene’s work is about process, about probing the materials around us, the other is about the joy of investigation. Max Keene Cup (2026) Photo emulsion and canvas on board 10 ¾ x 10 ¾ inches (25 x 25 cm) This layering, a drawing on cellulose placed over a background, echoes another process-based practice: hand-drawn animation. Not unlike the artist, the animator’s process begins with a storyboard, some preliminary sketches and a timeline. For Keene, it’s a reminder to mix the emulsion, test the muslin, bleach out the cyan, and tone with instant coffee. ☕☕☕ - Kate Nugent Cup is part of Max Keene’s solo Foundation, on view until March 7, 2026.

Max Keene Plaza 2 (2026) Photo emulsion on muslin 48 x 72 inches Plaza series is part of Foundation, a solo exhibition by Max Keene, on view until March 7, 2026. «  That gleeful experimentation calls to mind the photographic explorations of Sigmar Polke. An alchemist, he revelled in misusing photographic processes, often leaving chemical experiments up to chance. It was about the process as much as the outcome. » - Kate Nugent — « Cette expérimentation enjouée rappelle les explorations photographiques de Sigmar Polke.
