Nelson Moyà was a friendly hardworking man I met in April in Malawi who works as a cook at a girls only hostel. This hostel offers shelter and protection to Malawian girls so they can go to school safely. At the time it had 52 girls staying in.
This picture was taken in the kitchen where I found a huge pot on top of logs burning. Nelson was making a huge batch of Nsima which is a very popular food in Malawi.

"The Praying Hill" Ekwendeni, Malawi
Sometimes we needed a break from the town we were staying in, so we went for hikes. One of the hills we went up, we regularly found members of the community praying at the top. The belief behind this is that they are closer to God when praying.

I have recently returned from an amazing 3 month volunteering project with the British Charity VSO. They send groups of UK volunteers ages 18-25 to countries all over the world to work on a project to improve the communities they are placed in. I was placed on a project in a small trading town called Ekwendeni in Malawi. My project focussed on teaching Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights in schools and youth clubs to the youth.
Before I went away, I had no clue at all where Malawi was or even what to expect. I was happily blown away by the "warm heart of Africa" by its beautiful landscape, welcoming people and lifestyle.
Frackson, a 25 year old Malawian and aspiring Musician, is the man having his hair cut in the picture was my counter partner. This meant we stayed together in a host home. He massively helped me adapt and learn Malawian culture, how to cook and even how to wash my clothes by hand. -
