Every time you’d leave Nan’s house, she’d wave you out at the window blowing you kisses and catching them back in the return. She’d then climb up the stairs to hang out the window at the back of her house, blowing you even more kisses and catching them as you drove off. If she walked through a garden, she’d always stop and smell the roses. She always had room for an ice cream, and would spend hours in a museum or gift shop buying puzzles, cards, books. She had a love for paper she always told me. She told me that on the day I was born, when she first held me, that she whispered into my ear ‘be strong little fellow’. She said I then opened my big eyes and stared straight at her; in that moment she knew a bond was made. We saw each other and we listened, always. As I grew up, even if I didn’t feel like it in my self, she would always say to me ‘look after yourself cos you are precious’. She saw the best in me even when I couldn’t see it in myself, and it was those constant reminders of my worth, and her search for the beauty in the smallest of things, that shaped the person I try to be. I feel so incredibly lucky to have known this woman who was not just my Nan but also my best friend. I owe so much of who I am to the time I spent with her and the special bond we had. I’m going to miss having an ice cream and a natter with you so so much x
