For those of us who often find refuge in late ‘50s records, there’s something about a mono mix that just feels ‘right,’ and this modern work captures that sensation perfectly. It doesn’t come across as a mere imitation of the past, but rather as an artistic choice that gives the band its purpose. The trio sounds like a single unit, free from spatial distractions. Richburg’s drumming feels incredibly present, Yesseh’s tenor fills the room with authority, and Max’s bass grounds everything from the center. It is new music with the soul and punch of the great classics.
