Maxfield Wollam-Fisher
Cello
Maxfield Wollam Fisher is a cellist, producer, and educator. As a musician who revels in versatility, Maxfield enjoys collaborating in every genre from the traditional to avant garde, and folk to pop. Recently he could be found on Becky G’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert, Miss Lauryn Hill’s concert at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, and performing and recording tango in Argentina and around the United States.
As a tango musician for nearly fifteen years, Maxfield has performed with the likes of Julián Peralta, Ramiro Boero, Stratos Achlatis, Victor LaVallen, Pablo Ziegler and many others. Over this time he directed a number of projects including the Da Capo Tango Orchestra, Orquesta Tipica Loca, and the Mad City Live Tango Festival. Along with presenting workshops for both tango musicians and dancers, Maxfield is an advocate for cello and contemporary tango and recently wrote and recorded a series of tango arrangements for solo cello in Buenos Aires. Currently, Maxfield works with bandoneonist Heyni Solera in their duo Arco y Aire. Their arrangement of “La Bordona” won Best Latin Song for the 2022 Wammie awards, which can be found in their EP Overture. The duo released their album of new commissions from contemporary tango composers, Una Noche Entre Sueños, in 2024. Since 2018, Maxfield is also co-host of “Bienvenido al Tango” with Phil Jones on Takoma Radio 94.3 FM in Takoma, Maryland.
Currently Max plays with La Poesia Cello Quartet and indie folk trio The Timber Bridges. A dedicated teacher, he serves as chair of the strings department at Levine Music in Washington, DC where he coaches chamber music, teaches in the Suzuki and strings departments, directs the Marlin-Engel Solo and Cogen Concerto Competitions, and leads the Levine Tango Orchestra.

Maxfield has worked with postmodern choreographer Sally Gross of the Judson Dance Project, Klezmer musician Michael Alpert, opera singer Sylvia McNair, IN Series Opera Company, and arrangement and music direction of the Rite of Spring with Li Chiao-Ping Dance Company. Currently he plays with La Poesia Cello Quartet and indie folk trio The Timber Bridges.
Maxfield holds performance degrees from Indiana University and the University of Wisconsin and has studied with Sharon Robinson, Peter Howard, Tanya and Uri Vardi. Maxfield is on faculty at the Levine School of Music in Washington, DC where he has served as chair of the strings department, he coaches chamber music, teaches in the Suzuki and strings departments, and leads the Levine Tango Orchestra.
