A really really really nice time. South coast August - December. It’s all too easy up there - music, waves, good humans = realm. 💧🦎💚

Some select shots from an afternoon at home playing with water and light. Felt nice tapping into a more abstract visual world with slow shutter, while still maintaining a sense of familiarity and capturing the movement of the ocean with these shots. Big love for the ocean and the light that hits it.

These photos, particularly the first one, are dedicated to Mick Lawrence, a big figure in Tasmanian surf culture.

It’s obvious through seeing so many posts about Mick that his impact on the surfing community in Tasmania was incredibly impactful. Although I never knew Mick personally, one of the only interactions I had with him was a few weeks ago at the Foreshore, whilst having a beer and pub feed to celebrate an epic afternoon of waves. He commented on a friends Morning of the Earth hoodie, saying “What are you fellas doing wearing us old cobbas clothing?”, as he chuckled to himself. An incredibly brief interaction, which filled our table with laughter as he went back to sit down with his mates.

The morning these photos were taken turned out to be pretty special. A quintessential crisp winters morning at home, greeted by a beaming sunrise and pulsing lines in Fredrick Henry Bay. I woke up well before the sun, to make sure I had enough time to walk out to a spot in mind to shoot and still make it back for work at 9. A commitment to capture some waves that I knew I didn’t have enough time to surf myself. I don’t find it easy to watch waves and not be out there, but this morning was different and I’m glad I captured these scenes. On my drive to work, after sprinting back to the car to make it in time, I received messages that Mick had passed that morning. Later in the day, I discovered that he had in fact passed away at his home in Cremorne, very close to where I was all that morning. It felt special to know I was close to him on his final day on this earth, running around the headlands in a state of pure froth watching the ocean do its thing, something I’m sure he would’ve experienced many a time in his lifetime. A beautiful send off from the ocean, pulsing waves into his home break in his last hours to say thank you. I send my love to all of his family and friends, RIP Mick.
