The Machine Light ML15 Helios by Frank Buchwald kickstarts our series of limited edition art pieces for the 15th anniversary of the M.A.D. Gallery. Loooove this piece – from sketch to 3D art piece what an adventure - and only 15 will ever be crafted.
To mark the 15th anniversary of our M.A.D. Gallery concept, we invited several of our historic artists to create special editions that will be unveiled throughout the year. Am incredibly happy to begin this series with one of the very first artists who believed in the project: Frank Buchwald.
I first discovered Frank’s retro-futuristic “Machine Lights” online in 2010. What started as the idea of buying one for my home turned into a visit to Frank’s Berlin workshop – an old industrial building filled with brass, steel, sketches and vintage machines. The connection was immediate. In those days Frank was selling three to four pieces a year – all imagined, designed and handcrafted by him. On the drive back to the airport, I asked Frank how many he could craft in a year. He answered about ten, so to his total shock I ordered his whole year’s production for the Gallery. The beginning of a wonderful story for both of us.
Thank you Magied. Thank you for being there for me, when virtually no one was. Thank you for trusting me when it was a gigantic leap of faith – not once, but twice. Thank you for always being so kind and caring, notwithstanding your busy schedule and very important responsibilities.
Thank you for opening my eyes to this incredible country and its people. Thank you for always making me feel so welcome. Ever since that day, 27 years ago, when we first met in Dubai, you helped change my family’s and company’s life in so many ways. I will always try to make you proud.
Yesterday was such a sad day for all of us. My thoughts are with your beautiful family.
The incredible piece of engineering and craftsmanship that I will be wearing with immense pride this year ! Am lucky, I know a few people in the company...
When @marcnewsonofficial and Oliver Ike came out with the original 46mm titanium Ikepod Megapode in 1999 (reminder: men's watches were 35 to 36mm very conservative designs in those days) it blew my socks off !
So, when I discovered last month that Marc had teamed up with my old friend Benoit at @ressence_watches for this amazing collab I had to reunite both siblings 26 years later...
How to create a succession plan when am very close to 60 years old and my children are still young (8 and 12) ?
I started this brand all alone in my flat 20 years ago. Even though we have bootstrapped it ever since, we are now 72 in the team. The succession thematic is arguably the most important responsibility of my next years.
In the midst of an insanely intense and wonderful Dubai Watch Week, the very talented @chrisjameshall organised a panel with my old friend and watchmaker extraordinaire @voutilainenwatches on the subject of "Beyond the founder, who keeps the brand beating ?"

The attention to detail in each and every component of our pieces is sometimes overlooked by the public, because most focus on the creativity.
Here are just a few parts of our latest HM11 Architect Art Deco… This is also why I love what we create and craft at MB&F !
Introducing the Flying Balance Wheel, created exclusively for MB&F by artist Jan Borren!
You may remember Jan’s first kinetic creation — Wervelwind, the tourbillon sculpture we proudly showcased and sold at our @mbfmadgallery .
For our 20th anniversary, @jan.amsterdam returns after years of hard work with a new creation: a limited series inspired by our unique Flying Balance, meticulously crafted from 73 beautifully hand-finished components 🤩
Limited to 100 pieces, this edition is available exclusively at our M.A.D.Gallery and on our eShop for 3’950.- Swiss Francs.
In 2023 we unveiled HM11, the Horological Machine inspired by postmodernism architecture.
Arguably one of our most important horological achievements to date (and all that packed into a 42mm diameter case!).
Today,, two years later, we unveil the ART DECO variation of our HM11 – in only 2 x 10 pieces (to celebrate our 20th anniversary).
I love the Art Deco era because it blended the sleek and geometrical future with the ornamental and vibrant past – not a total rupture with the past, but nevertheless completely innovative.
How many of us were stunned discovering the Chrysler building in New York ?!
Kudos to @maximilianmaertens who transcended the original minimalist design we created with @ericgiroudesign to give it a whole new life !
