Maurice Chestnut (@max_washington ) danced in the Tony-winning “Bring In da Noise, Bring In da Funk” at 18. He won NBC’s “Showtime at the Apollo” three times; danced at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan in “Honor! A Celebration of the African-American Cultural Legacy” presented by Carnegie Hall and curated by the opera singer Jessye Norman; At the Schomburg Center for Research in “Black Culture in Harlem”; with the Montclair-based singer and pianist Geri Allen, adding his feet to the rhythms and to Ms. Allen’s vocals. He thrilled audiences at the Zurich “Theater Spektakel” in August 2010 when he performed with Savion Glover and Marshall Davis Jr. with “Bare Soundz.”, performed on tour as a special guest with such prominent jazz musicians as Christian McBride, Cyrus Chestnut and Thelonius Monk III.
Maurice is a Newark, New Jersey native (the same hometown as Savion Glover) and one of tap’s brightest stars. He began dancing at age 5, was a gold medalist in the NAACP Act-So competition. ITA (International Tap Association) Japan Representative.
