Upcoming Thursday we’ll have a playtime visit from aQa, bringing a five-hour record selection. aQa @maukerodermond is a Rotterdam-based artist whose fluid yet forceful approach to electronic music moves seamlessly from ambient and IDM to Krautrock (from time to time). With appearances at De School, Drift and Breakfast Club combined with his work at Offbeat Records he has established himself as a distinctive voice in the deeper currents of the electronic music. Drawing inspiration from Brian Eno, Biosphere and Drexciya, aQa shapes intimate radio shows and sets that are timeless and forward-looking.

I never expected to play at De School, but there it suddenly was. A once-in-a-lifetime moment that, with the launch of Het Archief, can now be relived.
It was on a Thursday around 15:00, when I was sitting at work and received a call. It was the programmer of De School, who tells me DJ Leoni got sick and asks if I’m available to open the next night in ‘De Club.’ It’s a three-hour slot, with DJ Stingray and OK Williams following afterwards. I would have exactly 32 hours to prepare, including finishing work, driving, and getting some sleep. I’d be playing at my favorite club, in my favorite area, opening for my favorite DJ. “Are you fucking kidding me??!”
I never imagined this opportunity would come, and as I accepted the offer I immediately realized it was a once-in-a-lifetime moment. From that moment on, every minute was spent on a trip down memory lane, collecting my musical timeline and creating a space of futuristic, aquatic music that shaped me as a DJ. That huge UR record I’ve been saving for a perfect storm, that Arpanet tune which I’ve never dared to play ‘cause it’s so complex to mix, or the Paschen’s Law track that must have been made for this soundsystem…
Every second was spent practicing for the set of a lifetime, collecting and discussing each choice with Sarah, who saved me from having a mental breakdown multiple times, until at 21:00 I got in the car and took off. I arrived an hour later, nervous as fuck, and was directed to an empty basement. Oh man, the feeling when I stepped into that booth… I will never forget that. I prepared the turntables with the sound guy (who was a real pleasure to work with) and discussed the light options with the lighting madam until the clock hit 23:00 and the lights dimmed.
Then it was showtime...
I won’t try to describe what happened next because I’ll never find the words to capture my experiences and emotions during those three hours. It’s part of history now. But with the launch of this project, I can share this valuable memory with you. I feel incredibly proud and grateful to own this moment and immensely thankful to everyone involved. Thank you all. I will never forget.
Na 6,5 jaar neem ik aan het einde van deze maand afscheid van @driftomtedansen .
Wat was dit een ongekend avontuur! En wat had ik dit onmogelijk kunnen voorzien, toen ik begin 2017 aanklopte als Marketing Stagiair. Vanaf dat moment organiseerden we 43 evenementen, ontvingen we duizenden bezoekers, ontstonden er duurzame samenwerkingen, trotseerden we één pandemie en creëerden we fantastische campagnes, creatieve programma’s en onvergetelijke herinneringen. Vanaf 2022, het jaar waarin ik aangesteld werd als Creatief Directeur, trokken we het Drift-DNA met succes door naar alle lagen van de organisatie, met drie onvergetelijke festivaledities als resultaat.
Brent, Diede en Jos: ik ben jullie dankbaar voor jullie vertrouwen. Ook gaat mijn grote dank uit naar Stef als mijn trouwe vriend en zakelijke wederhelft, het Drift-team voor alle mooie momenten, en al die inspirerende mensen die ik de afgelopen jaren heb ontmoet. Zonder jullie geen Drift.
Met een groot gevoel van trots en waardering sluit ik af. Voor mij is het na bijna zeven jaar tijd voor een nieuwe uitdaging, en richt ik me vanaf halverwege september als freelancer op strategische vraagstukken in de culturele en maatschappelijke sector.
