Architecture is a process as much as it is an outcome. Through iteration and testing we explore which ideas are worth pursuing and then how to make those ideas a reality. Some ideas become themes that reoccur in multiple projects, prodded and pushed in different ways each time. Shift House is an alterations and additions project that continues our exploration of reused materials in a new way, bringing them inside the home and imparting a sense of history and context through touch. Working with kauri reclaimed from the match lining and bricks salvaged from chimney bases on the property, we tested layout, detail and finish of the materials, seeking the right level of tension and tactility. Now as you transition from the villa to the addition, old materials used in new ways bring warmth and familiarity to contemporary spaces, while at the same time, creating a sense of connection to the original house and the locality that is felt both in hand and underfoot. Flexibility is an important consideration in any project. Most of us desire the ability to open up and close down our spaces according to function, season and mood. At Prospect House, custom cedar pocket doors provide options to tune spaces to the demands of family life, creating separation when required for sound or warmth, and with their textured panelling, changing the feeling of a space from expansive to intimate. Subtle shifts in plan, volume, and outlook transform every space at Prospect House, giving each its own distinct character. Here, the sunken snug offers a cozy retreat from the main living area, yet remains connected through the consistent palette of materials and the datum created by the Luca paving. This stone floor extends seamlessly from the living room to the terrace. Wrapping around snug windows it becomes a shelf hovering over a reflection pond and gently leading the eye toward the garden view. Shift House is a heritage renovation that bridges the gap between past and present. Located in a Special Character Area in one of Auckland’s oldest neighbourhoods, the design honours the heritage of the original house and street, whilst while adapting to the needs of modern living. As the house transitions from old to new, it shifts in plan and section to take advantage of the topography, views and sun. Inside, brick and kauri, salvaged from the original home, have been used to line interiors and create built-in furniture. This creates a connection with the villa and imbues new spaces with a sense of warmth and familiarity.
