Architecture is a process as much as it is an outcome. Through iteration and testing we explore which ideas are worth pursuing and then how to make those ideas a reality. Some ideas become themes that reoccur in multiple projects, prodded and pushed in different ways each time.
Shift House is an alterations and additions project that continues our exploration of reused materials in a new way, bringing them inside the home and imparting a sense of history and context through touch. Working with kauri reclaimed from the match lining and bricks salvaged from chimney bases on the property, we tested layout, detail and finish of the materials, seeking the right level of tension and tactility. Now as you transition from the villa to the addition, old materials used in new ways bring warmth and familiarity to contemporary spaces, while at the same time, creating a sense of connection to the original house and the locality that is felt both in hand and underfoot.
