Turns out F. Scott Fitzgerald can write. Very different reading a book because it was assigned vs choosing to read it… As with great movies (or maybe any movie), taking in a piece of art at a different phase of life makes the art different because of what you bring to it. Just experienced this with The Sopranos and now again with Gatsby. Also intrigued to see in the notes that, while it received mostly positive reviews when it came out (1925), sales were disappointing. It had a small readership during the late 1920s and early 1930s, but by the year of Fitzgerald’s death, 1940, sales had all but ceased…. THEN… after it was reissued in 1941, it began to win a following among teachers and scholars. NOW, it’s considered a classic and probably the most widely read novel written by an American in the twentieth century. Why am I pointing this out? Because whatever YOU make may not get an audience (now or ever). So you may as well make something YOU love. And then just hope others agree with you. 50 laps around the sun today for @deirdredelnegrodesigns I’ve been tagging along for the last 27. Any one of you who has ever received a house gift or a baby gift or a thoughtful thank you card or just a card to tell you that you’ve been thought about and you matter… you can thank Deirdre. Anyone who’s been a part of an impromptu get-together or ours, with zero time planning, great bites, good music and DIM LIGHTING… you can thank Deirdre. If you’re a stranger who met her for 15 mins at some screening or premiere and you run into her again even 20 years from now, there’s a good chance she will remember to ask you how your great aunt’s sister’s grandchild is doing after whatever tough news you shared with Deirdre… she remembers it all. D & B, you can thank Mom for most of the fun stuff you’ve done, the holiday cheer and decorations, the cross-country trips to see family for holidays and Summers, all mostly on a shoestring budget… Happy Birthday D, thanks for dealing with the uncertainty of my work up to 50… here’s hoping it gets a little more certain on the back nine! You know that I know that you torture me. And I, you. But I hope you also know that I consider myself lucky to have your fierce loyalty have my back. Happy 50th!
