Here’s the final sneak peek before Decades drops tomorrow on Bandcamp! It’s been an amazing journey putting this record together, and I can’t wait for you to hear it in full. Thank you all for the support so far!
The tune featured here is "Mr. D.G." a tribute to my incredible mentor and earliest piano teacher, Darrell Grant (@darrelljazz ). For those of you who don’t know, Darrell is one of the main reasons I am a pianist today. While auditioning as a drummer at Portland State he encouraged me to also pursue my nascent interest in the piano, eventually shaping me into a professional during the four years I studied with him.
Darrell came to New York in the late 80s and in 1988 joined the band of vocalist Betty Carter. The following year he made his debut as a leader with Current Events in 1989. The music here features a portrait of Darrell’s muscular piano playing as well as reflecting some of the music he might have been hearing in New York during this period. Thanks for everything, Darrell.
