So so so honoured that @northerndawnawards has chosen SOMETHING'S UP WITH ARLO in the Middle Grade Fiction Category. If you've ever heard me talk about this book, you know I wrote it for 12 y/o Baby Matteo, and that I recommend it to everyone who wants to feel 12 again; being chosen for an award that's all about lasting stories and the artistry of children's books means the absolute world to me.
So much love to the judging panel, my team at @readwithsprout and @5otterliterary , my fellow authors, and all the readers who have supported ARLO this far.

Extra extra, author goes on record to say that his book would be a pretty bad Steampunk but it might just be a decent Film Noir/Hard-Boiled Detective story...
Also I've been engaged since this book came out (because there was no better way to propose than after the launch of our brain-child book) but I realized I've never said that here so if this is how you're finding out . . . sorry 'bout that!

Happy 1st birthday to SOMETHING'S UP WITH ARLO! I used to struggle with the whole "book of my heart" thing (aren't they all the books of my heart?) but the longer I go on writing, the more I realize how much this story means to me. It's been a treat to see it resonate with so many readers, to both the kids it's meant for so they can feel a bit less alone during the trials and tribulations of being 12, and the people past that age who get to return to these feelings.
Because of that, I'd like to say that I don't currently plan on pitching an ARLO sequel. Who knows, maybe I'll change my mind later, but right now it feels wrong to prescribe a "next" to any of these characters when so many see their own stories in them. The closest you'll get is that second slide, where I've given you a little glimpse into what I PERSONALLY see as the future for Nero and Co.. Don't consider it "canon"; don't rewrite the "next" you imagined when you read. This is just my take.
More books are in the pipeline! More big thoughts! More brave moments!

Most Instagram writing advice is useless to your novel, because you’re seeing it at the wrong time!
There’s no use in formatting an essay until it’s finished, and there’s no use in cutting “filler words” while you draft a novel. In fact, taking advice at the wrong stage can actually HURT your project.
Here’s a crash course of draft priorities:
Square one: get to know your characters, understand their wants/needs/flaws (these will probably change as you go!), and build the scaffold of your project. Chase what YOU want to talk about; follow what feels interesting, fun, and compelling.
Draft 0, aka “the drafting stage”: FINISH IT! Whatever you have to do. Don’t worry about editing as you go. Don’t look back.
Draft 1, aka “the first read(s)”: look back on your monstrosity and rearrange it. Prioritize plot structure, character arcs, pacing, and the flow of exposition. Add missing scenes if necessary. Focus on the overall shape of the story.
Draft 2, aka “the aesthetic read”: now that the shape is decided, go in on details. Atmosphere, symbolism, tiny character quirks, and boosting genre archetypes. Be careful not to overdue it. This is where the project really starts to shine!
Draft 3, aka “the line edit”: now you can cut your filler words. Look for telling instead of showing, choppy sentences or repetitive sentence structure, and the line-level pacing. Kill your darlings—keep only what’s strictly necessary.
Draft 4, aka “the proofread”: grammar, spelling, continuity. If you haven’t formatted your project yet, now’s the time.
Submission, and square one: now you can approach new agents, or send to your existing agent! Submit, then LEAVE THE PROJECT ALONE! Circle back up to the top for your next project to keep those itchy fingers away from the old one.

GAME ON!!
FATHOM FALL is now available in hardcover, audiobook, and ebook wherever you get your books. Thank you to everyone at @bloomsburybooksus (namely @sarahshum1 , with a special shoutout to @thecameronkellogg ) and @alimcdme and @5otterliterary for all the work they’ve put in, and to the folks @typebooksjunction for letting me snap this pic.
I have an admittedly complicated relationship with FF—it’s always made me a little nervous, for reasons I had trouble articulating. As we’ve approached pub date, I’ve realized that it’s because FF feels like a heavy responsibility. All books are that—we’re responsible for what we say, and saying it with care—but this one has ended up being right on time with both political and global affairs, and the helplessness and need for control that we’re all feeling, especially young people. I struggle to call FF “dystopia” when it’s depicting real world struggles and events that might seem very familiar within the next ten years. Will this book change anything? Probably not. But it’s laden with the responsibility to empower readers to action or even just awareness. Hopefully it does just that. As Leo says, we CAN make a difference, even if it’s small.
Get your Toronto-based cli-fi action thriller now!
