We have a new book out!
Lisa and I get a ton of questions about our nomadic livesâwhat itâs like, how we do it, our favorite travel destinations. When we answer them, what we often hear next is this:
âYouâre living my dream.â
We get it. You see the photos, read the stories, and are swept away by the dream of being a nomad, traveling the world, and having adventures, all while living free from many of the obligations and responsibilities of ânormalâ life.
We were there too. For years. Because as glamorous as it sounds, becoming a digital or retired nomad is a BIG change. It can feel scary. Impractical. Overwhelming.
We remember those feelings well. The practical and emotional challenges of transitioning to nomadic living are still fresh in our minds.
So are the solutions. We overcame all the hurdles and are now living our digital nomad dream. Hereâs some good newsâitâs even better than weâd imagined! We have a deep sense of freedom, live in beautiful places, meet interesting people, connect better with loved ones, and enjoy low fixed expenses with few cleaning or maintenance responsibilities. Itâs awesome!
We wrote an eBook (pdf) to share our hard-won lessons and make your transition to nomad life easier. This is a short, focused collection of practical answers to the questions that keep your nomadic goal stuck in the day-dream stage.
QUESTIONS WE ANSWER:
1. What do I do with all my stuff?
2. Should I keep a vehicle?
3. What do I use as an address?
4. Where will I stay every night?
5. How far in advance should I plan my lodging?
6. What will my budget and living expenses be?
7. How will my health insurance work?
8. What about insurance for my possessions?
9. What about my doctors and dentist?
10. How much time does travel planning take?
11. Where should I go first?
12. What if things go wrong while Iâm traveling?
13. What if I get seriously sick or injured?
14. Wonât I lose my relationships and sense of community as a nomad?
15. What if my partner is hesitant to become a nomad?
16. What if I donât like being a nomad?

As an author and life-long book lover, I couldnât pass up the chance to visit the famous Livraria Lello in Porto, Portugal, often regarded as the most beautiful bookstore in the world.
Was it beautiful? Absolutely. Was it worth the $15 timed ticket purchased in advance to enter, still waiting 15 min in line, and being packed inside with hundreds of people all trying to get descent photos?
Yes, but I left pretty quickly. Partly due to its reputation as having influenced J K Rowling in her writing of Harry Potter, Lello is now more of a tourist experience than a bookstore one. I doubt Iâd return, but Iâm grateful to have had the opportunity.

Wandered the beautiful town of Horta in the Azores islands of Portugal. Made a challenging climb to some stunning scenery, discovered an abandoned outdoor amphitheater, saw a whaling exhibit, and visited a museum featuring detailed miniatures made from the branches of fig trees.

I wandered the island of Bermuda today. Spontaneously following a detour off the Railway Trail, I discovered Fort Sraur, an old British stronghold. An open gate let me descend into the depths of the underground tunnels until I came to a pitch black section. What self-respecting horror author could turn back? With my phone flashlight in hand, I followed the twisting passage and discover the daylight streaming in through a trio of rifle slots.

Itâs amazing how much the color of the sea changes depending on the weather. No filters or editing of either picture during our transatlantic crossing.

@lisa_mcmann and I saw one of our favorite comedians Mae Martin @hooraymae in downtown Phoenix with good friends @rachelfoulger , @tysonapostol and @bkonigsberg . It was a fantastic show and a great night, highlighted by being able to meet Mae backstage. If you get the chance, catch their show!
Our current hang out on our nomadic journey. Next up, a trip to MI to visit family, then a three week cruise to Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, and England, where weâll spend 10 days hiking in the Cotswolds and 10 days in Bath.
Dreaming of nomadic life? We wrote a short book on how to make the transition! Check out the link in our bio.

My daughter @kennedymcmann recently sent me this old video she took of my enormous face on a blanket draped over the railing at my Dadâs house. I look like a swollen ogre.
