Today, Matson marked two milestones in its fleet renewal program with the beginning of hull assembly on the second of three new LNG powered "Aloha Class" containerships designed for its Hawaii and China-Long Beach Express (CLX) services, and the start of construction on its third new vessel at Hanwha Philly Shipyard, Inc. in Pennsylvania. A small shipyard ceremony to mark the dock mounting of the first grand block assembly of the second new vessel was followed by the cutting of steel plates to initiate work to build the third vessel. Matson’s barge Islander docked in Saipan at 10:00 a.m. on April 24, 2026, carrying essential water, food, and emergency relief goods and supplies to support the community following Super Typhoon Sinlaku. A total of 31 containers were in Matson’s second shipment of the day. Earlier, Matson’s Galaide offloaded 16 containers, many of which contained FEMA relief supplies, bringing the total to 47 containers delivered today to support the NMI community following Super Typhoon Sinlaku.
The Matson Galaide and barge Islander will continue to make back-to-back roundtrips between Guam and the CNMI for as long as needed to deliver relief supplies and FEMA cargo.
Matson has resumed its regular service to Saipan and is committing two additional vessels to CNMI recovery efforts.
Matson vessel Galaide docked in Saipan at 7:04 a.m. on April 24, 2026, carrying essential water, food, and FEMA’s emergency relief goods and supplies to support the community following Super Typhoon Sinlaku. Galaide is one of two Matson vessels making deliveries to Saipan today. The Galaide delivered 16 containers, with 31 more containers expected on Matson’s barge Islander today.
Galaide is en route back to Guam to pick up more cargo and will return on Sunday. The Matson Galaide and Barge Islander will continue to make back-to-back roundtrips between Guam and Saipan for as long as needed to deliver relief supplies and FEMA cargo.
