Riders playing Kokpar, a national sport in Kazakhstan born of nomadic heritage.
Traditional equestrian game played in Afghanistan, Central Asian and Middle Eastern countries, this is a steppe polo where two teams of riders compete for a goat carcass. The teams play on a 100 meters field of steppes, running at first whistle after the decapitated carcass. To score a point, players must pick it up to the end of the field, go around the circle and leave it while evading opponents armed with whips to defend their camp.
Kokpar first appeared in Kazakhstan in the 13th century at the time of Genghis Khan, one of the greatest Mongol leaders. Once seen as a preparation for future warriors, then practiced during Turkmen wedding festivities, kokpar has now become a discipline in its own right.
