On my way home after yet another amazing trip to this beautiful place. I went over to Iceland as a surprise for @valdi1984 40th birthday. Although the weather forecast looked bad we made the most out of the windows of good weather. In the end it wasn’t bad at all and we even manage to get a proper sunburn 😅
Besides climbing and hanging out together we did a lot of scouting new possible lines, tried some new projects and did some FA. I had myself a very early morning session yesterday and I was super happy to put in the extra effort to finish the project from the day before. Now it is time to let the skin heal go back to training for the next adventure.
Big thanks to @stonythebalony for getting up early with me and taking me to all the places. Also thanks to the rest of the crew for coming along @ekonrads@kristjanbjornsson and of course @kr1strun for arranging everything and keeping my arrival a secret for Valdi.

Mr Incredible ✅
Put my gained Spanish fitness to optimal use to finish this amazing line! It has been a couple of years since I climbed an 8b in the FJ but this is definitely one of the best I’ve done. Walking up this morning and seeing the wall I was immediately doubting my choice to go here. Working the route the doubt grew because everything felt way harder than last year. After working the end I could climb that part in one go. I thought I would just give it a go since we took the effort of walking up here. I had no expectations so no pressure for doing the route. The moves felt hard but somehow I could just keep going. During the crux with every move I thought; ow I’m still on the route let’s try the next move which finally got me to the 🔝.
Doing a route without thinking you’ll be able to it is a feeling and experience that probably most climbers can relate to. I doesn’t happen that often but when I does it’s great! Let’s see what the rest of the weekend brings 💪

Luckily the prediction for 3 days of rain didn’t came through. Between the showers me and @walgersbas ticked some really nice routes. The great thing about the Frankenjura is that there are so many different crags. That can also be a issue with choosing which one to go to. We where pretty lucky finding just the ones which had some dry routes.
I had the feeling that I was getting used to the climbing here again. Normally it comes quite easy to me but after spending 6 months climbing longer routes in Spain and Italy I found it really hard to get adjusted to this style again. This picture is from a route called “Klare kanten zeigen” at Welle. It has been on my list for a while and it is truly an amazing route!

The Frankenjura season has started again 🙌
For the second weekend in a row, we visited one of our favorite places. Although we have been climbing here for many years the first couple of days always takes some getting used to. During the Easter weekend we were there with the kids and last weekend was all about some well deserved mom and dad time.
Some of the best routes from last weekends:
▪️Der Sheriff mit dem langen Colt 8- at Ponderosa ▪️Green Viper 8+/9- at Eiserne Jungfrau
 ▪️Timeline 9 at Steinerne Welt
▪️Vor den Toren des Himmels 9+/10- at Pfeilstein

🎥 is from a rarely repeated route called Elvis the Pelvis 9+/10- at Alter Fritz. Sometimes the best routes are where you have to find out all the beta yourself. Ended up doing a very weird double heel rodeo to match the arete.

Cubo Magico ✅ Since I first walked past this line last year I’ve wanted to climb this route; Cubo Magico is an 8a+ route opened in 1987 a true classic in Ticino. However I always felt a bit intimidated by the line and the comments it receives. Today I almost didn’t get on it again but since the route to the left was occupied and I didn’t want to wait any longer I decided to give it a try. I quickly figured out all the moves and just managed to climb the route at the end of the day.
In the past few months I’ve been slowly feeling a bit more into shape again. Starting my own practice takes a lot of time but luckily I’ve been able to make some time to boulder in between which I really enjoy in all the different gyms.
The last weeks I went lead climbing indoor I didn’t get much further than 7a. I joked that 7a indoors means 8a outdoors for me. It has become a completely different game and I believe the difference is starting to feel quite significant. Lead climbing indoors for me often means climbing on one leg and transitioning from one tweaked wrist position to another awkward position. Lead routes with footholds placed where you need them emphasizing body position and timing are quite uncommon compared to routes where you have to just pull really hard on a hold that is awkwardly positioned. That might be why we enjoy climbing outside so much. But I might also be turning into an old grumpy guy.

When you think of climbing in Switzerland in December, you would quickly think of bouldering. For this short trip, we brought everything: skis, crash pads, ropes, and quickdraws. Despite the moderate weather forecast, we managed to climb routes 4 out of the 5 days. A south-facing wall and some sunshine make it possible in Ticino to climb routes during this time of year. The video is from a route called “Ronin” in Sobrio. The walls we’ve climbed have little overhang, but we’ve managed to climb some fantastic routes! Now back to work and than time for Christmas 🎄

Climbers Care is growing! 🌱🧗♂️
Fatos and Mathieu are joining forces. From now on, Climbers Care is not just a solo mission, but a partnership driven by passion and experience.
With this growth, we’re convinced that we can support even more climbers on their journey back to performance. Whether you’re sidelined by injury, struggling to get back on the wall, or just not sending like you used to: we’ve got you!
Our mission stays the same: helping climbers recover, rebuild and send again. Only now, we’re stronger together. 💪
The climbing community is at the heart of what we do and we can’t wait to keep lifting each other up.

This one was on my list for quite a while. Nice team send with @_iwan_pasveer . Out of all the moves on this route we only had a couple that we did the same. Cool to see that there are that many possibilities in this complex route and that is doesn’t change the grade.

Another hidden gem in one of my favorites places! After being forced to climb mostly vertical routes due to my shoulder injury I could finally climb some steeper routes again. Although I haven’t done much training it feels like the strength is slowly coming back. Looking forward to going to Spain in 5 weeks.
The video is from a route called “Rockabilly‘s Babe” and for me its one of the best steep climbs in this grade in the Frankenjura.

The last few months, I have been slowly recovering from a shoulder injury. I first noticed the injury after last summer and it gradually worsened to the point where every climbing movement was painful in February. After physiotherapy and the Theragun and foam roller becoming my new friends it slowly went uphill 📈
During Easter we spend two weeks in Spain, where I could climb more and harder. This weekend was the second time this year in the Frankenjura. Despite coming here often, I still always need a few days to get used to the rock.
The video is from a route on Enigma: “When in doubt, run it out.” (9+/10-) I had been to this sector many years ago, but at that time the line looked unclimbed. Now the route is being climbed more often and turns out to be very nice!

Two weeks of cold and rainy weather in the Netherlands traded for two weeks of sunshine in Spain was not a bad choice. Ever since our previous trip to Calders, I had always wanted to go back. This year seemed like a good destination because I didn’t think it would be too crowded during the holidays. That turned out to be true; often there were only a few other climbers here, which allowed the kids to play freely everywhere. There are definitely many worthwhile routes in the 7c-8b range. If you enjoy slab routes, this is not your area 😄
Looking back at 2024, I felt a lot fitter despite some minor injuries compared to previous years. I climbed my hardest boulder ever and also climbed more routes above 8a+ this year than the years before. Balancing climbing, work, and family went better for me last year. Additionally, I chose a healthier lifestyle by no longer drinking alcohol and tried to establish more routine in my home training. I have no idea if that contributes to improvement, but it seems that at least the decline isn’t happening as quickly. I’m looking forward to 2025, curious about what that year will bring.
