[Month of Photography in Bordeaux] - “Mirazh” by @mathiaszwick . Albania 2023-2025. Mirazh is an exploration of the Vjosa National Park in Albania, where the promise of protection clashes with the ever-conflicted relationship between humans and nature. Through a metaphorical approach, this series examines the appearances, narratives, and realities that coexist along the river. The Vjosa, Europe’s last great wild river, flows between Greece and Albania. In 2023, the Albanian government designated it a “national park,” the highest level of protection possible for a watercourse, to preserve its natural flow and the 1,200 animal species that inhabit it, around forty of which are threatened with extinction. À travers une approche métaphorique, cette série interroge les apparences, les discours et les réalités qui coexistent le long du fleuve. La Vjosa, dernier grand fleuve sauvage d’Europe, s’étend entre la Grèce et l’Albanie. En 2023, le gouvernement albanais l’a érigée au rang de « parc national », le plus haut degré de protection possible pour un cours d’eau, afin de préserver son écoulement naturel et les 1 200 espèces animales qui y vivent, dont une quarantaine est menacée d’extinction. Ce fleuve indompté fait aujourd’hui figure de rescapé sur le continent européen. Mirazh– Albanie 2023-2025 ist eine fotografische Auseinander setzung mit dem Nationalpark der Vjosa in Albanien, wo das Ver sprechen des Schutzes auf eine weiterhin konfliktreiche Bezie hung zwischen Mensch und Natur trifft. In einer metaphorischen Bildsprache untersucht die Serie die Erscheinungen, Narrative und Realitäten, die entlang des Flusses koexistieren. Die Vjosa, der letzte große Wildfluss Europas, erstreckt sich zwi schen Griechenland und Albanien. 2023 wurde sie von der al banischen Regierung zum Nationalpark erklärt – der höchsten Schutzkategorie für ein Fließgewässer –, um ihren natürlichen Lauf sowie die rund 1.200 dort lebenden Tierarten zu bewahren, von denen etwa vierzig als bedroht gelten. Auf dem europäi schen Kontinent gilt die Vjosa heute als Ausnahmeerscheinung.

This month, @cozemagazine features Mathias Zwick’s (@mathiaszwick ) work on its cover, with an inside portrait of his journey as a photographer. It started with his passion for skateboarding, camera in hand, photographing and documenting his crew. He later left a career in law behind and traveled to Iran in 2015 to photograph a generation at a pivotal moment in the country’s history.
