Rhett Rotten of The Wall Of Death preforming Sunday afternoon. This was the last day of the show at its current location on N 14th Street in Williamsburg. The photos do not do justice to the excitement experienced and the sounds and smell of a two stroke Harley ripping by just a few feet away. Rhett and crew are looking for another lot/warehouse/space in New York so they can continue preforming on the 83 year old race track.

These images are from the factory of @ontarioknifecompany in Franklinville, NY. I was given a tour in order to observe the facilities and products while we were working on a set of images for their catalog. As we walked around the historic building I couldn't help but notice most of the staff seemed to consist of mothers and grandmothers. Their hands operated heavy machinery, chemical baths, and sharpening stones during the day but at night I imagined them shaping loaves of bread, changing diapers, or reading the news like my own grandmother, with big smiles and lots of love. I couldn't allow the strength and experience of these hands to be overlooked.

This is Clay's Aunt. I forget her name unfortunately but to my defense we only exchanged a handful of words as we departed. It seemed she appreciated the finer things in life... a bed, air conditioning and showers, and chose to stay close to their hotel room. Her kind face also leads me to believe she might not have enjoyed everything being said over that fire pit.

Clay, a Desperado waiting for a train. We met Clay at the fire pit outside our hotel the first night at Deals Gap. He was on a three week trip with his Aunt that brought them from Alabama all the way to Maine and back again. Clay was riding an old sportster packed to the brim with God knows what and his Aunt on a Honda CTX. It looked like a delicate balancing act but spirits were high and they seemed prepared for whatever came their way. Although he was only 18, Clay was an incredible story teller. A mix between the yodeling Walmart cowboy kid and James Dean, his pomade was on point and his voice unforgettable.

We met Winston the first night of our trip in the parking lot of the Super 8 in Front Royal, VA. We should have known this mismatched rider in a full set of Triumph gear riding a BMW R9T Urban GS was meant to be. I temporarily forget my distain for the engine that destroyed my ankle and ask, "Where are you coming from?" to which he replies, "Brooklyn!". I say something like "Holy shit me too! What time did you leave... ONE O'CLOCK?!? GOD DAMN ME TOO!" We rant about the traffic, the rain and the all out marathon we had on 78 and 81 over beers and whiskey that night. There is an odd courtship that happens between men at bars and gas stations on the road that therapists only dream about. Osmosis occured and Winston became a part our journey for the next 5 days, offering his levelheadedness as toll until he departed towards Atlanta.

A penalty cannot simultaneously effect compliance and raise revenue. It’s time to call some fines what they are, tax.
On August 17th 2020, the NYC Department of Health (DOH) announced a pause in regular inspections. With restaurant service mainly operating outside the dining room, the DOH focused on COVID-19 compliance, while SLA and DOT regulated the streets. But regular inspections will return and the DOH will continue to rely on revenue from fines, as it has for decades, if there are no structural changes. A new bill introduced at the end of February, Intro.2233, seeks to eliminate punitive fines from all city agencies; require warnings and a cure period for violations that do not pose an immediate threat; reduce the cost of remaining fines; and restore focus on education and training.
When we say restore the role of the NYC Department of Health, we mean as educators focused on preventing widespread illness. The restaurant letter grade system introduced after the recession, in July 2010, merely replaced a system of bribes exposed in the late ’80s. Letter grades, and the increase in fines that came along with them, were built into the city’s budget. It legalized cashflow that the city desperately needed, about as much as our vendors needed to keep it. And so the game began.
The following is an active collection of Q&As with vendors in support of Intro. 2233, starting April 2021, where we talk about the last year and what having this bill pass would mean for them.

“Financial retribution, irregardless of the hospitality industry, never really quite made sense to me. [...] I don’t remember the exact quote but it’s along the lines of, ‘If the punishment for a crime is a fine, then it’s legal for the rich.’” — Matt Diaz, @forallthingsgoodbk
Read the rest of our conversation with Matt Diaz (co-owner, @forallthingsgoodbk ), where we talk about opening a new business during a pandemic while regular inspections were paused, and how #intro2233 would improve our relationship with city agencies, namely the NYC Department of Health.

VENDORS for #INTRO2233, is a project I've been working on with @grade.pending that draws attention to a proposed bill in this years NYC budget that will provide civil penalty relief for small businesses, who for too long have been subjected to onerous fines from New York City. Please check out @grade.pending for more images and interviews as well as the link in my bio for the full series!
