Tote bags are everywhere. They’re handed out at events, conferences and activations, and despite often being labelled “reusable”, millions still end up in landfill every year.
When ReLondon’s textile behaviour change campaign, Love Not Landfill, was working with schools, they wanted to gift students something meaningful — not just another generic freebie. They wanted bags students would genuinely use, and a project where impact was designed in from the start.
We chose four of the Alterist designers to create a line of fashion-forward tote bags made entirely from rescued materials.
Each designer took a different approach to the project, rescuing materials from bins, charity shops and the backs of friends’ wardrobes, and transforming them into 100 one-of-a-kind tote bags gifted to students across London.
Check out the full impact of the project at alterist.com!
Earlier this year, Alterist collaborated with @relondon_uk on the @lovenotlandfill schools project.
Four Alterist designers — @clarachuu@materialresponse@hannahwildlondon and @create_with_alphy — transformed pre-loved garments and waste materials into 100 upcycled tote bags, gifted to students across London.
We measured the environmental impact of the project. By tracking material diversion, water savings and avoided emissions, we were able to show the impact that upcycling can have.
