@masonandwalesarchitects and @ajsavillebuilders have created a home that feels deeply settled in its landscape, even with the vast sweep of the Wakatipu Basin stretching out in front of it.
The site carries its own kind of drama, but the architecture answers with restraint, with strong, sculptural forms in schist, cedar and blackened steel, balanced by interiors that feel warm and quietly layered. Warm timber, soft texture and long runs of glazing give the interiors a calm, open feel that sits naturally within the alpine landscape.
There’s a sense of ease running through the whole place, from the pavilion-style layout to the way each room opens to the outdoors. It’s a home designed for connection and comfort, grounded yet luxurious in a way that feels completely effortless

Beacon Point House | Wanaka
A contemporary alpine residence overlooking Lake Wānaka.
Designed by Mason & Wales, Beacon Point House is carefully positioned to respond to both landscape and climate, balancing expansive glazing with grounded natural materials.
Timber, stone, and dark exterior finishes create a restrained architectural palette that allows the surrounding environment to remain the focal point.
Framed views, sheltered outdoor spaces, and layered interiors establish a calm connection between architecture and landscape.

"It was absolutely fundamental that you had to have a courtyard that you could see through to the view." Architect Hamish Muir on Northview House.
Designed by @masonandwalesarchitects within the Meadowstone Alpha Series subdivision in Wānaka, the home skews its plan to maximise lake views, shelters its outdoor spaces behind a protected internal courtyard and withholds the full panorama until the living spaces open to floor-to-ceiling glazing. Locally sourced stone, timber and interiors by Detail by Davinia complete a home built for generations.
