Up close with Mashell Black 🎙️ Legally Right is an eight-foot abstract painting that speaks powerfully to our times. Raising questions about justice, legitimacy, and the relationship between law and morality, the work is very much about this cultural moment and sparking conversations. This charcoal drawing is how I slow down after a busy day. Of course, this is work too, but it’s a different kind of work. When I’m constantly on the go, sitting down and focusing on this calms me. It helps me clear my head.

This is a portrait of Rabiyah and I riding a bicycle together. I’m not sure it looks exactly like us, but I tried my best.

“In this series, I explore the heartbeat of Newark’s streets through two complementary works. The first, a charcoal drawing, was born from direct observation as I sat in my truck, immersed in the rise and flow of light, people, and movement. The second, an abstract ink drawing, arises purely from memory—an echo of those rhythms and patterns. Together, they capture both the concrete and the ephemeral, the real and the remembered, of daily life in the city.” #newark #cityscape
