Had a blast at the @epascbwi spring retreat at @boydsmills . Thanks to @kcstrocchia for inviting me to come speak and share my experience in children’s publishing. I gave the keynote speech, did a book signing, gave critiques, spoke on 4 industry panels, juried the illustration challenge, the portfolio showcase and the silent pitch, as well as gave a breakout session. I read a quote today: “Adolescence is the beginning of a thousand tiny goodbyes.” 🥲 Today, a nice young dad picked up my son’s playset because he outgrew it. I didn’t plan for how emotional this would make me feel, so I wrote about it:
Goodbye Childhood
Goodbye childhood,
I know you weren’t meant to last.
We collected so many memories together,
But it all went by too fast.
Goodbye tickles, goodbye giggles,
Goodbye all the cuddly wiggles.
Goodbye bedtime snuggles,
And all the bath time bubbles.
Goodbye playset, we had a good time,
Goodbye to that one last climb.
Goodbye to that fast, green slide,
And for always being by my side.
Goodbye reaching for mommy’s hand,
Your childhood was so grand.
These precious moments pass us by,
So let’s always make them count
Because all the stages of YOU,
I don’t want to miss out.

I’d like to share with you a story about RESILIENCE. A year ago, my dad signed up to run the Berlin marathon in Germany. It was this past weekend. Twenty-two weeks ago, my dad’s training stopped when he had open heart surgery. Despite that most people told him he should give up running marathons, he was determined to prove to himself that he could at least try.
He started by walking again around the house. That progressed to walking around the block. Then lightly jogging, then running a few miles, all the way up to 22. He flew out to Berlin, full of resilience, courage, and effort. He ran up to 20 miles on race day, and had to listen to his body to stop. Although he didn’t finish, his remarkable comeback to the sport he loves brought him joy. He did his best given his circumstances.
As you prepare for the challenges of the week, consider just how far your effort will take you. It’s not always about the finish line, but the resilience to keep trying.

P.S. A Marathon Maniac is someone who has run 3 marathons within 90 days or 2 within 16 days. Must love running… 🏃♂️
