Honoring the angelversary of Oscar Cain Jr.
“Man Man” to those who knew and loved him best.
The Aster Project does not exist without community. And Oscar is everywhere in it.
Every organization we’ve had the privilege to work alongside carries some connection to him.
Voting rights.
Youth civic engagement.
The push for mandatory body cameras.
His fingerprints are on this city in ways most will never fully see.
We are all living in the wake of his belief in Atlanta.. in humanity.
His absence is heavy. It’s not abstract. It hurts. It stays. And he should be here.
We are sending love to Oscar’s family and all of his comrades in the streets of good trouble.
Thank you for what you built.
We’re carrying it forward now.

Jail should not be a death sentence but it is. This is not just a STL, MO issue or a jail issue.
Death by incarceration has existed sentence African people where held in Slave Dungeons before they were shipped out as human cargo and spread across the Diaspora.
There have been 22 known deaths in the St. Louis City Jail since 2020. At this point, if you are enter this death chamber there is no guarantee that you’ll make it out alive. This goes for people who have caused serious harm and those who don’t have money to post a bond for the lowest level charge there is.
This is about human decency, human life, and community care.
This is about slave dungeons, jails, prisons, juvenile detention centers, ICE detention centers, and any place where forced labor and punishment is upheld….

Mary Hooks is a lesbian, feminist, abolitionist, pan-Africanist, mother, wife, and a member of Southerners On New Ground and part of the leadership of the Movement 4 Black Lives.
Mary joined SONG as a member in 2009 and began organizing with SONG in 2010. Her commitment to Black liberation, which encompasses the liberation of LGBTQ folks, is rooted in her experiences growing up under the impacts of the War on Drugs.
Her people are migrants of the Great Migration, factory workers, church folks, Black women, hustlers and addicts, dykes, studs, femmes, queens and all people fighting for the liberation of oppressed people.
Mary Hooks believes that in order to reach a world that is free from fear and where the safety and dignity of all people can be honored, Black people, oppressed people, and all those who are impacted by white supremacy must envision a new world, build collective power, both locally and globally, and take action. She has been passionate about transformative organizing work that changes hearts and minds and has been at the forefront of combating racism, by taking on fights that impact the lives of Black and brown queer and trans people in the South, such as the work to abolish money bail, defunding police, re-imagining public safety and developing new organizers.

About last night: It’s always a joy to celebrate our activist writers but especially meaningful to participate in the launch of our volunteer @anjalienjeti ’s latest book BALLOT, an examination of the psychological, cultural, and political significance of voting in an increasingly anti-voting climate. What an essential discussion on abolition and voting as only one small tool in community work amid rapid fascism with our dear comrade @maryhooks . Thank you always to our bookstore partners @charisbooksandmore for uplifting the movement workers in our city. If you purchase BALLOT from Charis before midnight tonight, @anjalienjeti will also be donating $10 per purchase to @thesameerproject .
Bring your Refaat Mobile Library book returns and your friends Saturday, Feb. 7 to Atlanta’s @charisbooksandmore as we welcome award-winning author and political activist Anjali Enjeti (@anjalienjeti ) & beloved Atlanta abolitionist Mary Hooks (@maryhooks ) for a timely conversation about Enjeti’s new book Ballot, an examination of the psychological, cultural, and political significance of voting in an increasingly anti-voting climate. Note the library itself will not be on site, but we’ll have our @thesameerproject Gaza fundraiser and the chance to donate books to our liberation library by purchasing right from Charis shelves! 🍉
From our partners at Charis: The event is free and open to all people, but we encourage and appreciate a donation of $5-20 in support of the work of Charis Circle, our programming non-profit. Donate on Crowdcast or via our website: /donate or in person at the event.

More than a decade ago, Mike Brown was murdered by police officer Darren Wilson. This tragedy proved a broken system and ignited righteous outrage worldwide. Black organizers united to fight back, and a year later, we had our first official M4BL convening in Cleveland, OH.
We organized on the spot when another young Black boy was almost kidnapped by the local police. Our folks came together in 2015 to fight back in that moment and have continued to resist in this formation ever since.
People power is revolutionary!
