Three years in the making, I canโt believe itโs finally time to share this project. My friend Basie and I wrote this book together andย ย I couldnโt tell you the amount of time and energy this project took, but the time spent is really nothing. Seeing this become a physical item after so much time passed, the book was pushed back, edited, redacted, went through many series to reach its final form, a jambalaya of its own kind, and itโs just as important as any show, solo or group, would be us.ย
During the time we wrote this, both of us were living in New York. Basie, born and raised on the Lower East Side, and I, being from the West Coast, met under the most unassuming circumstances, and life recommended a poem about making our way through it, moving through the busy, fast-paced breathing, smoke filled lung that is New York City. Now, three years later, Basie, living in Mexico, and me, I moved back to LA.
Itโs really more than a book; itโs a small show in book format. Basieโs poetry, and my drawings about observations of buses, and trains, and taxis and citibikes, and ferries.
ย
My deepest thanks to Leslie at Dugood press for making this project happen. And also a special thank you to Zane for hand-stitching each book. And to Cassandra, for keeping us encouraged through the wild tether of bookmaking. Please stop by our booth and support.
Things get pushed around, back, to the side and take a winding and uncertain route โ to arrive, finally, in the best way possible.
