I needed to go back today. Exactly one year later. To try and close the circle on a brutal 12 months.
At 3:28pm on January 8, 2025 - after walking a mile up to our street in West Altadena - I turned the corner and saw that our entire block had burned down.
That’s when my world split in two and the path I was on permanently froze in time. Back then I described feeling like someone carved a hole in my chest and dropped a bowling ball in there. That’s grief.
Even though I absolutely hated the drive almost every weekday into Hollywood and back, when I got home to our block it was always worth it.
I exhaled. I had a rhythm there. I could write there. I grew my vinyl, CD and book collections there. I made tiktoks there. Danny and I made new traditions and memories there.
I took long walks on Saturdays to Lake Avenue. I ran on trails by JPL and down tree-lined streets past folks on horseback. I worked out in our garage while blasting music.
We had a living room wall with curated pieces of art we loved. Friends were close by. The liquor store was around the corner. Nice neighbors on either side. The house needed improvements but we made it our own.
I’ve been a city boy most of my life so it took a minute, but after a while I really connected with the rugged beauty and the quirkiness of small town life up against the mountains in Altadena with its dramedy-filled Facebook groups and friendly local businesses.
Sure...we had fireworks, the occasional gunshot, and that kid behind us who sometimes got high and bounced his basketball early in the morning.
But we also had a church on the corner, neighborhood cats that we named, and mountain views from the front porch.
I was very lucky to have lived in Altadena “before the fire”. I still miss that life.
Last night we crossed the first #EatonFireAnniversary bridge with community in a Grocery Outlet parking lot and at Fair Oaks Burger. It was beautiful, heavy and laced with anger. We prayed for the 19 souls we lost.
Today at exactly 3:28pm I turned the corner again... there were blue skies, a few homes being built, and trees repairing themselves.
Signs of hope for the year ahead. Onward...

Everything But the Girl’s ‘Walking Wounded’ turned 30 today!
A slightly pensive, lovelorn and elegant electronic dance pop album. It didn’t repeat the folk underpinnings of 1994’s ‘Amplified Heart’ - although it features a couple songs that share that album’s DNA. Instead it’s a beautifully constructed ballast between AH and 1999’s ‘Temperamental’ and their best-seller for a multitude of reasons.
It was primarily recorded at home in London. They wrote “Mirrorball” on Chambers St. in Tribeca. “The Heart Remains a Child” lyrics still wow me all these years later. We don’t talk about the hairpin curves within “Flipside” enough… I could go on and on and on.

I got something to say about it - and it goes something like this…
Both Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter can work that slight babydoll quality into their vocal delivery - M’s is more travelled obvi - but both of their voices tandem well and it’s nice to hear Sabrina’s vocals slightly back in the mix in a song.
Kinda obsessed with how M’s spoken word almost exactly mimics the tone and spatial bounce of her speaking in Justify My Love. I keep waiting for her to ask “What are you gonna do?…”
And I live for the Express Yourself callback in the lyrics “Bring it Sabrina / You got something to say about it?”
I’m also vvv intrigued with how Madonna’s spoken word in the album opener I Feel So Free is kinda smudgy - she sounds wary or pensive.
Then with Bring Your Love as track 4, M’s talking is clear-eyed with an erotic sheen. I can’t wait to hear what goes on in between these two songs on the album when it drops.
Solid first single. This era is taking off nicely. LORDY WE NEEDED THIS.

It’s been very difficult for me to keep my mouth shut about what’s been going on with “Propeller One-Way Night Coach” because I’ve been so excited about what we at @thekidsatplay made with John Travolta and his team.
We have lived and breathed every frame, every music note, every VFX edit of this film for a long time with John and it’s been an incredibly inspirational and educational journey to finally get to this moment today… when it was announced it’ll premiere at the Cannes Film Festival followed by a GLOBAL release on Apple TV.
I’m so proud to be an Executive Producer on this really special project (John’s script and his directorial debut!) as well as one of its two film editors (with my cohort Adam Varney). This is a nice turn of events after 30(!) years in the game.
Big shout to @jasonhberger and @amylaslett04 at KAP who gave me the opportunity to step back into this project after the fire set me back a bit. Can’t wait to see our art and KAP’s hard work with John, our talented cast and our superior crew shown to the world like this.
We’ve done a handful of private screenings in different parts of the country over the past 9 months or so and the responses let me know that you are going to really LOVE this film.

The “Looking For Mr. Goodbar” soundtrack is seriously stacked with Thelma Houston, Commodores, The O’Jays, Bill Withers, Diana Ross, Boz Scaggs, Donna Summer covering “Could It Be Magic” and more.
