‘Step in my world’. The beautiful and abstract series Painting the Town by Carrie Mae Weems at the Rijksmuseum inspired me. Weems interweaves personal stories with themes of emancipation, power and inequality. This series tell a harrowing story. In Portland, Weems hometown, store fronts were boarded up as a precaution during the Black Lives Matter protest.The city government painted over the protest messages on the boardings. I searched for an extra dimension in her photographs of these boarded storefronts. It is not abstract, it is all about people. Step in the art and find the message.
