THIS SUNDAY 6PM-10PM I will be playing records at Durham’s esteemed @theoldnorthbar at the bequest of local impresario @dythekid_basicbattlesbooks , providing your Mother’s Day drinking soundtrack. Allez quoi!
Over the years, I’ve released a few ephemeral @_____neptune_____ records, cdrs, and tapes under the guise of Magnetism Crafts with the intent that, someday, I would release music by other artists. Immediately after hearing the lovely, aching, and witch trippy solo songs of @sparrowthebrave , I approached her on making a record and was elated when she said yes. After a year of work, Amanda and I just approved the test pressings, pressed with care by the mighty @smashedplastic in Chicago, and I will soon be offering a limited 12” with silkscreened art by legend @ron.liberti . More soon!
Late 70s, a few years before Grandmaster Flash changed my life. The only trace I could find of this poster on the internet was a single image…and it was for sale.
The internet reminded me that twelve years ago I went pro, after a lifetime of working at coffee shops, record stores, and bookstores; joining Phaidon as a their east coast sales rep. I ended up tracing some of the same travel routes I had taken touring in Neptune but at a reasonable bedtime and more agreeable accommodations. While I no longer have my original business card with my Cambridge address, the selfie is from the night before I first went into the office, taken at the Americano. In the morning, I sat for breakfast immediately next to Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, and their kids. I thought every day thereafter was going to be touched with glamor. Nope. I don’t think I ever even turned on that BlackBerry. Thanks @viggreg and @amyhordes
I love narrative in music videos, particularly when it’s hitmen taking out the band one by one. And even more so when it’s the greatest band of all time, Six Finger Satellite. The gentleman finishing the job at the end is rad novelist Sam Lipsyte.
