Berlin Deko surveys early 20th-century German furniture design, highlighting diverse styles, key figures, and Berlin’s role as a creative hub between 1910 and 1930. Berlin Deko is the first comprehensive English survey of early twentieth-century German and Central European furniture design to move beyond the notion of a linear development of styles between Jugendstil and Bauhaus. It explores the period between 1910 and 1930, revealing a diverse continuum of styles, including the overlooked “Expressionist Rococo” that flourished in Berlin. The book highlights Berlin’s role as a center for furniture and interior design that attracted international artists. Key figures such as Leo Nachtlicht, Oskar Kaufmann, Bruno Paul, Fritz August Breuhaus de Groot, Paul Thiersch, Emil Fahrenkamp, Eduard Pfeiffer, and Lajos Kozma played important roles. Berlin Deko re-examines and celebrates Berlin’s legacy as a creative center, revealing a richer, more nuanced narrative of German design history. One that celebrates diversity, individual expression, and the enduring influence of Berlin as a creative hub. #BerlinDeko #Book

Arthur Helbig Table lamp, Berlin, circa 1922 Cast brass base in the form of a Fabelwesen (mythological creature). The compact body, pronounced paws, and contained tension echo the presence of a guardian lion (Foo Dog). Ornament and symbolism shift into a reduced, surface, where volume and proportion carry the expression. A characteristic example of early 1920s Berlin design—poised between late Expressionist vitality and the emerging of Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). #interiordesign #BerlinDeko #artdeco #ExpressionistRococo #NeueSachlichkeit

Berlin Art Deco Architectural Tour The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin October 21–25, 2026 Join me on this extraordinary trip to Berlin, where we will explore a previously overlooked chapter of German Art Deco. This three-day tour is the culmination of twenty years of research into the tension between two currents of German Art Deco: Expressionist Rococo and New Objectivity. We will focus on major works from this period, including private villas, industrial temples, cultural institutions, and sacred spaces. Special access to these buildings will provide insight into the evolving relationship between the interior and exterior of the city during this period. The Berlin Deko Tour is an architectural journey through Berlin and Potsdam. Explore how masterpieces by architects such as Peter Behrens, Jean Krämer, Erich Mendelsohn, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe have shaped modern life. At each stop, experience a different idea of modernity. The tour balances observation and discussion, allowing time for reflection at each site. The Kunstgewerbemuseum is a treasure trove of applied arts. Here, we’ll gain context for the architecture we’ll encounter throughout the tour. We will further explore Mies van der Rohe’s career by witnessing the elegance of his first commission, the House Riehl, and observing how his style developed through subsequent commissions. Next, we will delve into the theatrical world of Oskar Kaufmann by analyzing the Villa Konschewski and the Renaissance Theater. Weaving through the urban tapestry, we will encounter the Expressionist Kreuzkirche church designed by Paulus & Paulus. For a fascinating contrast, we will examine the concrete elements of the AEG turbine factory that are reminiscent of an Egyptian temple, where sacral allusion meets pure functionalism. The itinerary is subject to change. For booking, contact Caroline O’Hara at Duchess Travel: [email protected]. @duchessofdiscovery Link in bio #Berlin #RitzCarlton #Architecture #BerlinDeko

Lounge chairs with molded seat shells veneered in burl walnut. The‘ defining feature is the inverted helmet concept. This idea was popular around 1800, though the principle dates back much further to antiquity. In this particular design, the inverted helmet becomes a resting place, offering the „warrior of light,“ in the words of Paulo Coelho, a moment to pause. #GioPonti #LampedoArchive

NOVEMBER 1 AND 2, 2025 JEAN-BAPTISTE BOUVIER GALLERY - Stand 89 ALLEE 6 PAUL BERT On Saturday, November 1 and Sunday, November 2, the Jean-Baptiste Bouvier gallery welcomes Markus Winter on the occasion of the publication of his book Berlin Deko. The author will come to present and sign his book, accompanied by an exhibition-sale of a selection of furniture and emblematic objects of Berlin design of the early 20th century, visible at the gallery until the end of December. Published under the direction of Markus Winter, Berlin Deko offers an unprecedented exploration of German and Central European furniture and interior design between 1910 and 1930. Far from the agreed narrative that makes the Bauhaus the only heir to Art Nouveau, the book reveals the richness and diversity of a period of creative bubbling, where Berlin is establishing itself as a major centre of international design. This book highlights a German Art Deco with singular contours, mixing historical elements, expressionist influences and folk inspirations. Architects and designers such as Fritz August Breuhaus de Groot, Emil Fahrenkamp, Jean Krämer or Paul Thiersch explore bold and hybrid forms, between geometric rigour and baroque exuberance. This meeting will be an opportunity to dialogue with Markus Winter, to discover his editorial work and to admire the selection of pieces gathered by Jean-Baptiste Bouvier, witnesses of this abundant and cosmopolitan aesthetic.
