A lot has changed in the dance music scene since the pandemic. These days, genres and artists are often pushed through social media with massive advertising budgets. For many of these artists and their management teams, it’s mostly about money and status, and they use dance music as a vehicle to achieve their goals.
Real musical talent, the ability to truly read a crowd, and the power to give strangers the time of their lives have become very rare on festival stages and in clubs.
As you’ve probably noticed, I don’t post much content, mainly only when I have releases or gigs coming up. The experience a great DJ or live act can give you is something social media can’t replicate. Social media could be a great way for me to connect with my fans, but most of you never even see my posts. The algorithm shows my content to maybe 5% of my followers, and the rest haven’t seen anything from me in ages.
A lot of genuine DJs and producers face the same situation here. Many eventually give up and move on to different careers.
It’s up to promoters, booking agents and labels to help change this by focusing more on quality and emotion rather than on artificially inflated big names with huge follower counts.
And it’s also up to you, the ravers. Listen to the music of the artists you followed because they’re big. Check their authenticity. Find out whether they actually create their own music, play incredible sets or if they’re just exploiting the scene for profit.
Often, artists with 0 to 50k followers make more inspiring and meaningful music than artists with 500k followers, simply because they’re true artists not social media experts.
