People think of exercise as something you add to your life, an intervention. The real intervention—the experimental condition we're running on the entire world—is sitting around all day. Exercise is just a restoration of normalcy.
Everyone wants the perfect workout routine, but most people are overcomplicating fitness. My minimum effective dose is simple: walk every day, lift weights twice a week, and sprint once a week. That combination alone can get you to 85–90% of your genetic fitness potential when paired with the right diet. You don’t need to destroy your body with chronic cardio or spend hours in the gym every day. Consistency with the fundamentals will always outperform complexity. Had a great conversation with @megynkelly breaking down what actually works.
You’ve been told VO2 max is the ultimate longevity metric.
My guest on today’s podcast disagrees.
At 72 years old, @marksissonprimal is redefining what what elite fitness with aging actually looks like. He describes how it is not about chasing a single number or optimizing one system at the expense of everything else, but building a body that works across the board.
So what does real-world, “old-man” fitness look like? Here’s what we cover in the episode:
🏋️ Why VO2 max is overrated and what chasing it cost him as an endurance athlete
🎯 The “Old Man Olympics”: his decathlete approach to fitness at 72
🍷 The alcohol debate: why “any alcohol is bad” is oversimplified and how to drink without wrecking your health
🦶 Foot health as low-hanging longevity fruit: why your big toe matters more than you think
🤖 AI, biohacking, and GLP-1 agonists: why none of it matters if you haven’t nailed the basics
👟 What’s new at @WearPeluva : trail shoes, pickleball shoes, winter boots, and other new minimalist footwear tech developments

Most modern shoes disconnect your feet from the ground, but Peluva was designed to restore the movement and sensation your body naturally craves. With individual toe slots, natural toe splay, and just enough cushioning for comfort, you can still feel the texture of the world beneath you — the sidewalk, cobblestones, and every subtle shift in terrain. Your big toe is meant to be the primary driver of movement, helping power every step, sprint, jump, and pivot, yet most shoes compress it against the other toes. Peluva allows your feet to move the way they were designed to, and for thousands of people, it’s been the first time they realized how much traditional footwear was working against them.
One of my favorite ways to stay fit has nothing to do with the gym. Ultimate frisbee is fast, competitive, social, and an incredible full-body workout. You’re sprinting, cutting, jumping, reacting, and laughing the entire time without even thinking about “exercise.” It builds endurance, agility, coordination, and connection all at once. If you’re looking for a fun way to move your body and stay active for life, I highly encourage everyone to give ultimate frisbee a shot.
I’ve found that incorporating micro workouts into my routine is a game changer. One effective strategy I use is to perform five sets of 35 push-ups throughout my day. Instead of doing traditional push-ups on the floor, I lean against my kitchen counter for some elevated bench push-ups. I space these sets out, allowing for about an hour of rest in between. This way, I can fit in a full workout without the need for a gym, all while ensuring I recover properly between sets. It’s an efficient and effective way to stay active!
What if working out didn’t have to feel like punishment?
In this clip from The Model Health Show with Shawn Stevenson, Mark shares a simple but powerful reminder: movement should add to your overall readiness for life.
It’s not just about burning calories.
It’s not just about chasing soreness.
It’s not just about forcing yourself through workouts you hate.
It’s about building a body that’s ready for life.
That means moving in ways that challenge you, yes, but also finding things that feel fun, playful, and sustainable.
A hike.
A game of pickleball.
A walk with a friend.
A bike ride.
A swim.
Playing in the yard with your kids.
Trying something new just because it sounds enjoyable.
When movement feels like play, it becomes easier to come back to. And when you come back to it consistently, it adds to your strength, resilience, energy, and overall readiness for life.
Primal move: This week, choose one form of movement that feels less like a workout and more like play.
What’s one way you like to move that actually feels fun?
