Native to Mexico and Central America, we decided on Ziricote to frame this print of a Yaqui dancer. It’s known for its beautiful “landscape” figuring and commonly used in furniture making as well as guitars. Check out the last slide! We finished the frame with a paint match on the face to the teal in the print and waxed the sides.
Mel Bochner’s HA HA HA 2021.
Spline joined maple frame with painted face and natural sides. We milled 3/4” outer radiuses on each corner of the frame to mimic the legs of the font and kept the inner at 90° to mirror the rectangular shape of the piece. Fit with Optium Museum Acrylic. #melbochner
A lot of fun designing this frame package. Corks were a first for us but I think we nailed it. The oval window, I believe, allowed us to create a more interesting layout of the corks versus a linear / boxy layout if it had been rectangular. We worked with Rian Fabrication Services in Southern California to bring our waterfall box mat to life. The natural linen is absolutely beautiful!

Here’s a finished look at the Geo 4 moulding we introduced over the weekend in our stories and the new home to this beautiful Tauba Auerbach print from her exhibition S v Z @sfmoma . Inspired by the Up Died OG font, our intention was to design a moulding that is simultaneously a nod, not generically and also didn’t visually compete with it. We had a lot of fun thinking about and pushing the design for this frame package and hope you like it too!

When we began designing the frame package for this piece it was immediately clear that going with a rectangular frame would have created too much negative space in areas where the piece has more acute angles. Our solution, twenty two degree and ten degree miters on the lower right and upper left corners of the frame. These angled corners not only lessened the amount of negative space but softened the frame lines overall. Choosing a white painted finish and fitting the frame with Optium Museum Acrylic allowed the color palette to blast off the wall.
Absolutely blown away with our concept for this Barry McGee screenprint. White closed corner frame? Meh, too easy. Monochromatic florescent was the only way to go for this seamless presentation. Welded aluminum frame we had our new friends at @reliablepowdercoating finish for us with a florescent orange powder coat to match. Hand painted maple spacers to also match and fit with Optium Museum Acyrlic glazing. At times, navigating this project was challenging but we learned a lot and it was worth every minute and all of the effort.

Excited how this screen print by Christoph Niemann @abstractsunday turned out!!! We matched the background and spacers to the gray paper used for the print. Black painted maple frame with inner and outer radiuses to mimic the curved pipes throughout the illustration. Fit with Optium Museum Acrylic Glazing. 🖤🖤🖤
Sandow Birk “A Walk in the Park (Insurrection - Jan. 6, 2021)”
Spline joined walnut frame finished with an ebony stain. Instead of an 8ply window mat we elected to go with a slightly raised 4ply one instead. Visually, we get the depth of an 8ply mat but without the heaviness an 8ply mat can at times create. And that little drop shadow is so so nice!!!
Overall dimensions 97” x 19”

I always love to see friends work come through the shop. It’s even better when another friend is getting it framed for their own collection. Josh Smith @joshgrantsmith from his body of work The First Years we framed in a closed corner white maple frame package with Optium Museum Acrylic Glazing. The First Years is also a beautifully thoughtful and amazingly printed book published through Dark Spring Press @darkspringpresstucson
