I still vividly remember those moments. Every time when I noticed Geoff Boyle in an audience, I was always becoming both nervous and curious about the things to happen, no matter if I was sitting in the last row sneaking into the first cinematography related events a long time ago, or in more recent years when I was on stage myself.
Sitting in front of this man, who was a teacher, friend and for sure the arch enemy of all - to say it in his words - ill informed cinematography gossip, always promised to become a rollercoaster ride.
This wonderful and strong no-nonsense character was pretty much always good for a surprise, having his index finger ready at all times to point at slides, to encourage the audience to look closer or to force them to question what they just heard and start trusting their own eyes.
Many of us in the cinematography space learned from him how important education, the sharing of experience and knowledge becomes as constant change of technology got pretty disruptive over the past two decades. Geoff feared that the craft of cinematography could somewhat get lost by the ease of use /accessibility of modern tools in todays image creation. He taught us cinematographers to be the guardians of the image, to protect the craft, but he also advocated for cinematographers remain in or even retake control over the so called digital imaging pipelines.
We learned on CML how little every single of us knew, and how much we knew as a whole community. And Geoff made sure, we also learned how careful and humble we have to be when people start listening to us, when we get our own audiences, no matter if it's our crews or in education. We should both honor their trust and the craft of cinematography by itself.
