This time in 1988 - S Express' second week at number 1 in the UK chart
Announced by the cutting edge, digital computer technology Ceefax 😀
What was your fave track of 1988?
Ps: S Express Box Set - Hey Music Lover - coming around October 2026. 7 CDs and 2 vinyl 😍
A timeless UK acid house anthem 🔥
Released in April 1988, S’Express’ ‘Theme from S’Express’ was the first-ever acid house track to reach No. 1 in the UK charts.
S’Express was the brainchild of DJ Mark Moore, who had made a name for himself as a resident at venues like The Mud Club and Heaven. Their debut single, ‘Theme from S’Express’, is a stomping slice of dancefloor psychedelia. The chart-topping track, co-written and produced by Pascal Gabriel, features a wide array of samples, most notably the crunching bass synth from Rose Royce’s disco anthem ‘Is It Love You’re After’ and the vocal from TZ’s ‘I Got the Hots for You’.
Other samples in the track include Karen Finley’s ‘Tales Of Taboo’, Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson’s ‘The Bottle’, an aerosol can for the hi-hats and an InterCity train. The track was a dancefloor hit that helped take acid house into the mainstream in the UK, and thanks it remains massively influential to this day.
Speaking to DJ Mag in 2015, Moore recalled, “I always loved disco, even as a punk rocker hiding my disco records. I wanted to make sure the S’Express record didn’t sound like anything else — I didn’t want it to be a copy of a Detroit record or whatever. All my influences were thrown in, especially the punk influences.”
“Radio 1 thought, ‘We’re going to look like idiots if we don’t play it’, so they played it and it went to No. 1,” Moore shared in the interview. “Then it all went crazy. I became a pop star without meaning to.”
On this day 38 years ago, S’Express made UK chart history when “Theme from S-Express” became the first acid house-track to reach No.1, marking a breakthrough moment for electronic dance music in the mainstream.
Theme From S Xpress - Tony De Vit Remix from 1996.
Thank you Tony for this Ravetastic mix. Some might prefer the original version but the young'uns in 96 loved it. I loved it too!
Here’s hoping Insta won’t mute this one 😅 (It’s my track dammit!)

The wonderful duo of Marc Almond and Dave Ball return, doing the synth-pop and electro dance tracks that they do best.
From their forthcoming album which will also be the last Soft Cell album after Dave Ball’s sad and untimely passing. What a beautiful man. A pioneer of electronic dance music, along with Marc. He is so very missed ❤️🕊

Delightful @billieraymartin and Eric Robinson on the vocals.

So this lot have gone and nicked my S Express name for their gas station.
Well at least they have the cheapest gas prices in the USA 😀
