Capturing totality in motion was by far the most work I’ve ever put into a single shot.
Writing a custom script for exposure ramping and designing/3D-printing parts to remove the solar filter quickly between frames allowed me to smooth the exposure differences between phases and shoot the whole eclipse from start to finish. To capture the wide dynamic range of the scene during totality, from the bright pink prominences to the outer corona extending into the dark sky, I shot a 5-frame exposure bracket every 2 seconds during totality. Each set of five frames was then carefully combined to create individual frames for the final video.
The full 700mm telephoto shot is just over 3 minutes long and comprised of 5,276 individual 8K 14-bit raw images. Combined with the two other wide shots, I ended up capturing over 11,580 frames during totality.

Late to the post as always but lots of hard work went into this show and I’m so grateful to have been among these talented goblins putting in that work!

Bailey’s Beads seen during the April 8 total solar eclipse above Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. This effect occurs just as the eclipse transitions into or out of totality when the moon’s rugged terrain breaks up the sliver of sunlight grazing its surface.
Each composite is made up of 11 individual frames from my total solar eclipse timelapse.

Looking back at commercial jobs from this summer. This 8 camera job in Ohio with @anti_data@skoach_@jonhamblin and @guybauer was a good time.

Happy birthday to Aisha who completed another trip around the sun yesterday. She is such a bright light in my life and I’m always in awe of how much of a positive affect she has on everyone around her.

Found an old roll of Ektar sitting in the bottom of a drawer recently. Turns out it was from my trip to Korea back in 2017.

Throwback to spring when @aishalovesit and I took a road trip through Sedona, Page, The Grand Canyon, and Zion. Living out of a van, if just for a week, was a great experience.

I shot a handful of timelapses last summer at Grand Teton National Park. I’m not so sure they will cut together well for a longer form video this time so I figured I’d just start sharing some of my favorite shots here!
