We’re still loving @openground.club Situated in a decommissioned World War II bunker near the main train station in Wuppertal, a modest industrial city in western Germany, Open Ground has the perfect set up. From inception, sound has been the top priority, with a custom Funktion-One system and a forensic approach to detail from the the founders Markus Riedel and Mark Ernestus. The result is an immersive, high-fidelity space that feels almost utopian in an era of financial strain and compromised audio setups. @michaellawson____ visited Open Ground to tell the story of how it became one of the most unique and ambitious new venues in Europe—and beyond. "I'd never been to Africa, but I had to go there and see." Watch Inside Mark Ernestus' Ndagga Rhythm Force, the new film from RA out now. This 16-minute documentary follows the Basic Channel cofounder and the troupe of Senegalese mbalax musicians as they play and rehearse for multiple dates around Europe. Starting at Wuppertal club @openground.club and wrapping up at London's @cafeotodalston , where the band held a three-day residency. The film also tells the story of Ernestus's love affair with mbalax: how he came across it, his first trip to Senegal in 2011 and how he came to collaborate with griots like percussionist Bada Seck and vocalist Mbene Diatta Seck. The project began in 2011, when Mark Ernestus (of Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound, and Hard Wax fame) traveled to Senegal in search of original Mbalax recordings. A spontaneous session with over 20 percussionists in Dakar led to the 2012 twin albums 800% Ndagga and Ndagga Versions, released under the name “Mark Ernestus presents Jeri-Jeri.” Since then, the group has evolved into a fierce live outfit, touring widely and earning acclaim for their raw, hypnotic energy. Their powerful new live show premiered at the Gaswerk Music Days with singer Mbene Diatta Seck, percussion legend Bada Seck, and key players from Dakar's vibrant music scene. Einen magischen & rituellen Abend erlebten alle die beim Doppelkonzert von Lamin Fofana und Mark Ernestus’ Ndagga Rhythm Force dabei waren.
